I just picked one up, here in the Winnipeg, Canada, home of igloos and mosquitos large enough to carry off small children...give me wide open spaces, so I can watch my dog run away for days.

anyhoo, the neck is in great shape, body has a couple of finish cracks, and one little crack from the bridge towards the tail, dead center on the body....kind of a shame, with the original case.

I picked it up for 500, so a couple of questions. Was that a fair price, and would it be a good investment to get a new body for another 500? We have an amazing Ovation luthier here in Ontario, he comes with much trumpeting and accolades from the house of Kaman....

Tell me, should I keep it and fix it, or sell it and try again?

Jim

Jim, you need to post some pics.

Those are good questions. Are you planning on keeping this guitar or are you looking to turn it for a profit? If you put a new body on it, you probably won't get your money back out of it. But if you did put on a new body, you could also put on a top with different bracing.

I did that with an old GC 12 string and had a top built with A bracing. Wonderful sound out of that guitar now.

But I guess the bottom line is, what are your plans for the guitar?

OK, pics coming later. In talking to the Luthier, via email, I was told that the body, bracing and top is one piece (at least to buy), so $500 gets me everything but the neck....kind of odd, but I could keep the original like a freaky kind of turtle shell.....

crack is about 1/64 of an inch, and about 4 to 5 inches long, finish cracks go out from the rosette to the outside edge, and one crack in the outside of the case, about 1 1/2 inches by one of the latches, and the regular scuffs, letting you know the case is 33 years old.

I'll post some pictures later.

thanks

Jim

Here is the reply I just received from the Luthier.

"Jim,
Here's my opinion after years of dealing with this kind of situation.Have the cracks repaired on the GC and just play it.There is no sound loss because of the cracks.Use the money you save on a whole other guitar. You can find deals on other USA made Ovations.
Ron"

Now, how to find a good luthier in Winnipeg....

If your buying the top, bracing, and body from Ovation to have your guy attach the neck, then have Ovation build the top with the A bracing pattern. You can order it how you want it.

I push hard for that bracing pattern because I think it's a major improvement over the original Ovation fan bracing for the 12 string.

Anybody else want to chime in on this?

Thanks, guys.

I will keep it, play it, enjoy it. It came with a Fishman pickup, so I'll play this anytime I want some Byrds.

If I want to play 6 string, I have a Tak; if I want to play Orbison, I have an Ibanez Artcore; Rock, a Gibby Les Paul, and anything I can't accomplish on those, I'll have to play on the piano.....LOL. :p
