Hi Club Members (Members Club? ( :)

I was looking at this guitar at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI that looked to me like a longneck because of the side fret markers. I called and had the guy take a second look at the guitar and he said the sticker reads 1768 Elite. He also said the neck is standard, so ... What's Up? ... Did they make Elites with side fret markers one year?

It looks like it has a DS778 neck on it, but the bridge is in the standard position.

Maybe someone was drinking the night they made this one. I WISH it was a DS778, because I would probably snag it at that price. Even with the finish crack.

I believe some of the Craftsman models had the side markers on standard scale guitars. Dave

Wouldn't that show up in some way on the sticker?

I think John has it pegged. Someone changed the neck or it was made that way. That's not a standard issue Elite neck.

Dave, I know Glen had a craftsman, just what are those?

You can't just change the neck to a DS778 neck. It wouldn't play correctly (fret spacing would be wrong). I really think it's a Nakeo or Craftsman model Elite.

All wrong! This looks like one of the engelman prototypes, called 1768 EMSX German Edition Vol. I - like the one you can see in my signature.

Buy it - this guitar is great! Never had or played a better sounding Elite!

Looked at Elderly's page now - definitely a 1768 EMSX.

1768 on ovationtribute

I only changed the gold tuner buttons to ebony ones.

You're right. I should have stated it more clearly. It could have been built that way and fretted correctly.

Well ... That's sounds pretty good to me, but like I said before, wouldn't the model number difference be reflected on the sticker? The guy spoke with me on the phone and said it only shows " Elite model 1768". Kurt, what does yours say on the sticker?

Vince,

klick

and scroll down. The Label on mine says "1768 German Special Edition Vol. I".
I would not give to much on the Label.

Hi Kurt, Thanks for the pictures. I really like the ebony tuners you put on yours. It seems to set off the colors of the fretboard rather nicely. I have an idea that both you and Dave are right. I remember the Craftsman models having the side markers also. Maybe both models were manufactured at the same time??? It would make sense to do all the necks at the same time to save money. I guess the secret lies with someone at the mothership. As far as purchasing this one ... It is up for grabs, because I have my sights on a nice black Adamas I right now, and can't afford another Elite (as much as I would REALLY like this one with ebony tuners installed. (:

P.S. I just happen to be going to Lansing tomorrow on a trip to have my keyboard repaired. I'll be stopping by Elderly's in the afternoon to sit down and play this one. If anyone is interested, I'll give you a first-hand report.

Hi Vince,

as long as you are a "natural (-4) man", I am sure you will like the looks of this guitar. The engelman's colour is much lighter than sitka top's, with a very fine grain - and the matching headstock is beautiful.

And - I am very curious if it is really one of the engelmans. Would be the third I ever heard of - and, as far as I know, they made not more than a handful of them.

Best Regards,
Kurt

Found some more information about the 1768 EMSX in

the vault.

Looks like "a handful" means a little bit more in germany.

Well I just got back from Lansing / Elderly Instruments about a half hour ago. I played the Elite. It had some pretty crappy old strings on it, but it DID play and sound wonderful nonetheless! The surface crack was about two inches long and there was another small ding on the top, near the binding. Aside from those minor imperfections it's a great guitar. While I was there I played about 25 other "high end model" guitars, including an old Gibson 200 Jumbo, quite a few Custom Martins, High-dollar Taylors and a Laravie. One of the $6,000 Taylors played and sounded pretty nice, but not nearly as full and clear as the Elite. I can also say the others didn't stack up either, although they were nice instruments. I ended up spending my last half hour playing the Elite.
