Here is yet another top-damaged Legend, this one a custom.

Can anyone give me an idea of what the mothership would charge to fix this — which I assume they would do by putting a new top on?

Also please, if you were to send this guitar in for such service, could you 'pick' a new top color, or would it have to be the same?

Thanks

yeah I can't see a link anywhere, but .....for what it would cost to replace any top on a legend, just buy a different guitar. Unless they were paying you to take it away. as far as I know, a top refinish is about $450, a top replacement can't be any cheaper. what would a nice legend go for? uumm, I could be wrong about everything though... peace mike

I see the pics now. It is a custom legend, but I think it is the same outcome.
If i am thinking correctly(goodluck), Ovation doesn't replace the top, they replace the whole bowl and top assembly, and I will guess that is closer to $600(more w/ abalone?) (I am really guessing here).
So you are buying a neck (frets, tuners) which a new neck assembly costs $450 from the Big O factory. (everything but tuners).
Is it worth it to buy a used neck and then ship it to CT. for a new bowl/top to be attached, as compared to buying a used ax. Probably not, unless there was great sentimental value.
Hey for the same price you would spend on this ax, you can buy my N769 craftsman custom legend on ebay right now. :D

peace mike

This is something I have had some experience with though about ten years back. I have a Glen C. 12-string that got whacked south of the bridge resulting in what I thought was a finish crack. Local guys said the factory had to fix since they had a unique finish. So I sent to Conn. and it came back fixed. Can still see the crack but way down in the finish (a #4). Played great and was way cheap, like $175 for the redo and another $50 or so for getting it wired (it was a 1978). Two lessons: First, the factory is very easy to deal with and communication was great. Second, finish cracks ain't always. John

This looks like more than just a few cracks: looks like the top is busted pretty good: from a hit on the bridge probably. I'd say a new top is the recommended repair for this...so, after the $600 or so for the repair and with the price you bought the guitar for, you'll have less than a grand in it...about what you'd pay for one that wasn't broken to begin with...so, since you bought it and have the money invested, night as well fix it...its a great guitar and it'll look brand new when you get it back!
