Rumor is that they had a bunch of super straight and close grained soundboards. But the problem was that if they used them, the other 95% of the production run of '87 Collectors would be considered inferior and as people sought out the special ones, the rest of the run would be slow sellers. So a young marketing wiz, much like myself, came up with the idea to paint the special ones black to hide their quality from the casual observer, yet still make them recognizable to "those in the know".
