Location: North Carolina | The guitar closest to the door when I left for my Sunday night gig was the Taylor, so I grabbed it and away I went.
That thing had a wolf tone in this venue that I could not kill, not with eq, not with parametric eq, not with phase reversal - nothing. Perhaps it was just the overall "woodiness" of the box that I wasn't used to, since I've just used the Ovations on gigs for the past couple of years.
Whatever it was, I won't make that mistake again. |

Location: Omaha, NE | Does your Taylor have the ES? I used to have a 714ce myself. I started out with the AA version of the ES. Then had it upgraded to the 9V. I thought the 9V version was pretty good, for what it was.
Anyway, was your wolf a hot note or a cold one? One thing I can say for my Taylor is it was pretty feedback proof.
All the same, I sold it. But that's another story.
The big thing I noticed with the Taylor is the ES was so "mellow" that you needed to play at higher gain levels to be heard. The Ovation sound is edgier and cleaner, which lets you play at lower levels and still cut through.
Which is why I have an Ovation and not a Taylor... |

Sorry, couldn't resist. I don't know anything about the ES system but I would imagine a good parametric EQ could deal with it. Sorry I can't help other than kicking dirt.

| An English luthier once said to me "Have you ever seen inside a Taylor guitar? They are the worst made guitars ever."
We were talking about prejudices towards Ovations at the time, and a good couple of years before I ever owned one. So no OFC influence there. |

Location: North Carolina | I like the Taylor, I won't get rid of it but I prefer the utility of the Ovies in a gig situation.
My 714 is the older version, with the Fishman barn door setup. I had gone to a B-band system which I liked immensely when the original Fishman gave me trouble. I have since reverted to a Fishman because the B-band didn't have a pre-amp that fit in the barn door hole. Now they do, and I'm thinking I might switch back to the B-band. |

Location: Omaha, NE | I hear you. You might take a look at the DTar stuff as well. It won't solve your barn-door problem, but its a terrific system.
Dave, the ES almost requires a parametric EQ. Without it you are constantly chasing your tail. Its a decent system...particularly the newest 9V version. Its quite impressive. But its still wrong for me.
My amplification needs tend toward high volume club environments. The ES is made for the coffee house guy playing through a small combo amp.
I'm completely satisfied with my VIP equipped Ovation and don't miss my 714 in the least.
But I do take some exception to the comment that, seen from the inside, Taylor's are poorly made. Say what you will about them, the fit and finish (including inside) is spectacular. The LAV Koala that I kept is not, in that respect at least, the equal of the Taylor that I sold. |

When I play out it's at the Mermaid or O'Kanes and I know from experience that the Taks, 2080D or 1984 work great there. So that's what I take. I play many different guitars in the house, and some are better sounding than the Taks but in the live situation, use what works. |

| I saw inside a Taylor 3 (maybe 4) years ago at the London Guitar Show. They had a cut-in-half model to show how their new pickup system worked (ES? - the one with the cables running all the way round the edge). Every brace had splinters coming off it, the purfling was coming unglued all over the place and the bridge plate on the underside of the top was hanging loose at one end.
It may have been only meant to show the new electronics, but it wasn't the smartest thing to do at the biggest music show in the UK.
I have no particular axe to grind about Taylors - I have no real opinion on them. But the luthier I mentioned builds fantastic guitars and I know what I saw. |

I am using it on all the live recordings on our myspace page. |
