Saw a guy on TV last night with a fold-up guitar that he'd designed. It was an electric guitar with a hinge mechanism near the nut and another one near the bridge. When it was folded the neck then slipped into the body of the guitar without having to remove the strings. He was then able to fit it into a backpack.

It looked pretty cool but I don't know how practical it would be.

Are there any fold-up guitars around and if so, have they been successful. The mere fact that I'm asking this question probably means the answer is no.

BTW, if anyone is interested, the show was called The New Inventors, on the ABC down here. I'm sure they have a website if you want to have a look.

No, I missed it Oz. Looks interesting.

For any overseas members that want to watch it, here is the link.

Look for 'Electric Nomad'.

Seeing it's only an electric... if you're REALLY serious about portability - guitar AND amp, check THIS out.

Oz, I was editing my post as you were replying. Check out the OTHER link in my reply.

Learning new 'tricks' with computers is quicker if you spend more time USING the computer instead of waiting for stuff to download. I feel your pain mate.

You want another lesson? No problem, except... it's your turn to come up here.

Not much use without a "fold up" amp to go with it. :D

I didn't say anything. Actually as I'm an acoustic sort of guy, I've got my eye on the Traveler Escape Mk II. There is a broken one on US eBay which I'm currently winning. The electronics are not working, but it sounds like it would be fairly simple to fix as it is probably a broken connection somewhere. Even if I couldn't fix it, it would still be something to work the fingers on when you can't take your real guitar with you.

In that all in one post I was amazed that he just sort of pulled on the neck and the strings tightened up to (apparently) full pitch. Is he superman or was there some other mechanism going on there?

Oops, I meant AJ. Sorry Ricardo. You know how it is. You've seen one Aussie, you've seen em all.

...and yeah, the Japanese fold up guitar was pretty amazing. It took him longer to put on the strap than it did to assemble the rig.

The local newspaper did a story on this guy this week. He claims to have spoken with a couple of major guitar manufacturers who have shown some interest. He didn't mention who they were.

Take a look at the Voyage - Air guitar. I saw this demonstrated at Fine Fretted Friends in Livermoore, CA this spring. Just amazing. Folds together into an OM sized guitar and it was in tune and ready to play. Very cool. http://www.voyageairguitar.com/
