This 1651 was a pawn shop rescue. The previous owner had removed the stereo electronics, plugged the holes, and installed an aftermarket pickup...which I removed. Now it's a straight acoustic. It's really in nice shape and sounds great, but could use a refurb. I'd planned to send it back to the Mother Ship, but I've decided to let someone else take on the project.

The fretboard has some noticeable wear (first three) and there is a one-inch finish check on the top, extending downward from the bridge near the A-string. Hard to pick up with the camera, but noticeable. Also looks like it could use a new saddle. Other than that, it's solid.

One other thing worth mentioning... it does have a "used-to-be-owned-by-a-smoker" smell. When I got it, the smell was overpowering. Used baking soda on the inside of the guitar, and it's much better... but not perfect.

Taking into account the work that it needs, I'm pricing this at $300, plus shipping. Happy to answer questions, if I can.

Save you..you have come to the wrong place, Vince. Please join the rest of us by overstocking on the guitars. Who knows, you may need it for the rainy days.

PM answered.

Yeah, I know it's a good deal. If you're content with it "as-is," it's a ridiculous bargain.

Well even with the couple minor issues (smell and finish crack)it seems like just correcting the fetboard would be relatively inexpensive. There are a couple more agressive ways of working on the cigarette smell that could be tried, although most that I've read on that has stated it never completely goes away. Like I said ... for that price it leaves quite a bit of room for dealing with the issues.

1651 is one of the very best sounding ovations of all time. Really nice guitar. Spray the inside of the guitar with a healthy dose of ozium daily for several days and the smell will be gone.

Ozium? ... Oh yeah, I haven't used that stuff for a LONG time(: Hey Doc, maybe you'll change your mind and keep her after all. I was thinking maybe some Lysol spray also, followed up with some Febreeze.

Is the stink your major issue?

No, it's more a matter of too many guitars. Got my eye on something else, and my wife & I have a "one-in, one-out" agreement.

(Although in this case, it may be a "one-in, 2-or-3-out" situation)

This'd look good in your collection, Vince...

My girlfriend used to work at a place that rented beaded gowns for formal occasions. They can’t be washed so, to clean them, they put them in a plastic tent with a small ozone generator for a short time. It works. Ozone is an extremely strong oxidant and the concentration needed is minute. The place in Houston is called Starlit Soiree. There are probably places like this in all major cities. BTW, I’ve never tried this.

You could also try to put it in the case with a little pot of (fresh) coffee powder for a night. I often hear this helps to get rid of smell. Then again... a guitar might be too big for that.

All very interesting suggestions. They would be particularly helpful to the NEW owner, whomever that may eventually be.

Focus, people... focus...

For a small initial investment there's a lot of guitar here.
