I have an OP40 pre-amp, and I really like the sound with the pre-shape activated. But I was curious what it's really doing.

Does it just simulate certain settings on the EQ? In other words, with the pre-shape off could I get the same result by adjusting the EQs to the right settings? Or does pre-shape do something more than that?

And if I activate the pre-shape, should the EQ sliders be left at neutral, or is it fine to tweak it further?

Just a guess . . . works as an on/off controller for the eq?

It pulls down the mids a bit. I don't know if you can duplicate it with just the sliders. It is fine to pre-shape and then tweak the eq sliders some more if you need it. Trust your ears on what you need for eq.

It boosts the high & low frequency centres and dips the midrange. Think of it a bit like the loudness button on old hi-fi amps. It's the instant-gratification "smiley-face" EQ curve, and while it can sound good at house level or low to moderate gig levels, it can sound gutless and thin if you need to be loud.
