i recently bought my uncles adamas from his daughter for $300. she wanted to keep it in the family. my uncle worked for and was friends with charlie kaman, so after my uncle had a hard attack charlie, made this guitar for him signed and dated the label inside the guitar in pen. so my question is should i play this guitar or should i insure it and keep it in its case, with original strings attached but loosly. i have 4 other guitars. i tried contacting the company but was told kaman ovations was purchased by fender. i also have the amp my uncle used on other adamas's he owned. its also an ovation model k-6001. regards

Cool Story... You should Play it, then pass it on to your children.

I am guilty of having an Adamas that I never take outside...
But I took it outside the other day and enjoyed playing it.
I have other guitars, but what is the point of having an expensive guitar if I never play it?

Insure it for about $50,000... Then play it!

(What is the deal with keeping the original strings on guitars?)

Or sell it to me for $600 and I'll play it!!

Seriously, you paid $300!!??? I think you have the record for all time steal on this forum (unless some naughty person here actually stole one).

Play that little sucker, you'll probably find your other guitars start gathering dust.

Play it. That's what they are meant for. And post some pictures of it. What did your uncle do at Kaman?

Hang around long enough and you will realize you paid about 1/6 of what it is worth....possibly worth even more depending on the model and condition.

thanks for all the advice, my instructor called his vintage guitar buyer/seller and he made me a $20 thousand offer site un seen. can't do it, it was sold cheaply to me to keep it in the family. as for the original strings still on it,that was one of my first questions, and i got the well thought out reply of " i dunno ". so there going they smell of rust and leave neat colors on your hands. lol. the only thing i see is that there are shiney marks on the fret board, only the first 4 frets, from use. from what i remember he use to sing and play alot of kume by yah type songs so he wasn't a gifted player, as i am not a gifted speller! i am of course new to this forum and didn't see indavidual reply to post button so i threw it all in one reply. i will probably play it now and again, love the sound, probably love it more, when i change those strings, he must have been so fond of. my uncle worked just on ovation guitars, so all 5 of his kids got one or 2, and haven't a clue as to what they have. i'm not telling them, they might want it back.lol. thanks to all, and did i miss the reply to individual post button?

Nope!

Anyway, I often see old guitars listed on eBay stating that they still have the "original strings" on them... Like that is a Good Thing.
(It ain't)

Plus, once you change the strings you will have the opportunity to clean the fingerboard, frets, headstock, bridge, and all that stuff.

Post some pics when you get fully set up...we'd all love to see the guitar...20k is probably high...:-) - but if it's worth that to you...then so be it. 1978 puts it on the earlier side...but not the beginning. Charlie's son lurks around here - so if you post - lots of us can shed light on the guitar...glad it is in the family...btw- play the guitar - play the snot out of it....they do open up...I got one many attest to the fact....Stephen T is probably dead on ...on the price...if you don't sell it...who cares what the price is...lots of Charlie history on this one it sounds like...

Give me that vintage guitar buyer/sellers name.

I got a bunch from around that time and earlier and would be more than happy to sell them for 20K each.

Hell, For 20K each I will give him a buy 4 get one free deal!

Thanks for the story though....entertaining for sure.

You forgot to mention that it's a 1689 wide neck model. ;)

well the 20k wasn't a joke, but not a chance would i sell it, this would cause a family uproar. besides i like playing the damn thing. and for $300 how could i ever complain. its a great guitar, odd looking in comparison to my other guitars, ornate i think is a good description. so how could i add a pick up so i can play it amped? without a center hole of which i am used to, and who should i bring it to. not just any guitar center right?? sort of curious about that, i know my cousin has an adamas that has a factory installed pick up, but, i don't remember seeing much of anything except for the phone jack hole, did i miss something? is it worth the effort or am i making a mistake? i have the ovation amp that my uncle had as well. big thing but all solid state. has a rear seperate amp for microphones. its also in really good shape, and i play my electric though it without a problem. doesn't have all the gadgets todays amps have so i am limmited, unless i can add an effects board or pre-amp. this is all greek to me. when i go for my lessons he has all of the latest gadgets and my electric can sound really cool with the right equipment. any suggestions as to adding a pick up to my adamas, and what brand, and where to have it installed? regards dave

David, you really need to post some pictures of this one. Not many Adamas were made without a built in pickup. If you want to electrify this, there is only one option, and that is to send it to the factory where they can install a proper one - anything else is sacrilege! Besides that, Ovation pickups are the best anyway.
