You have to realize that Amer'kin humor is based on short (attention) bursts for immediate effect.

While the British have refined the art of long-suffering and dryness to the point that you can't tell their sarcasm from the debates in the House of Commons!

I just talked with Miles and we agree that the winner will be the one that bids highest and that this is a very desireable but low performance instrument.

My earlier offer to you still stands although I'll need some coaching on the timing... you were always better at that!

Happened to me on Sunday

Those of you who have kids probably know who the "Wiggles" are, hugely popular Australian international childrens entertainers.

Murray Cook the "Red Wiggle" donated his 97 Gibson Les Paul to a Performing Arts High School in Sydney to auction on Ebay as a charity fundraiser.
It was to be autographed and a letter of authenticity.

I really thought it would make a lot considering their popularity and the fact that the guitar was the genuine article worth $2-2.5k anyway.
Not some crappy Epiphone with a celebrity signature.

It was a 7 day auction and it struggled to $1825 with about 5 min to go.
I was prepared to pay around $3-4k.
With 30 secs to go it was at $1950.

I thought someone would be sniping at the end so 15sec to go hit it with $4200.
Won it for $2005.

Bargain!!

I was just making a point Mike, I wouldn't dream of placing a bid in any case if I knew you wanted it, your offer to act as middleman on my behalf, is generous beyond words. (especially considering how much I'm sure you'd like to win the auction) Like I said earlier, if I can ever return the favour, just let me know.
The thing with the written word is that you can't always make out `the way' things are being said, and so apologize if I've got wrong -
I pride myself on having a great sense of humour - (I think Everybody Loves Raymond, is the best thing ever to come from the U.S.)
It just seemed to me that some of the comments were getting a little heavy, (I don't think I've got that all wrong) and the saloon doors had just swung open.
I'm pleased you and Miles have had a sensible discussion about it.
(I await with baited breath to see who wins)
All the best to you, Mike.

Yeah, that's it Jim, rub it in - that's just what I'm on about - being able to just chuck your money away on some crappy Gibson Les Paul, while everyone in the United Kingdom is struggling through a recession !
The good news is I've got the highest bid on a white sliced loaf on eBay.
It's up in 3 days, the wife and 10 kids are looking forward to eating if I manage to win.

I need to add "Titus" to the list along with "ELR" as far as best comedy. I think its the realness that makes it funny and painful.

If I had AJ's money, your sense of humor and my good looks I'd be one hellofa good catch...

AJ, Will the Wiggles guitar be at Riverfire? Should we wear plain t-shirts in strikingly different colours? Which colour was the cursed Wiggle, was it yellow? I'll stay away from that colour. My nephews are Wiggle fans (well the little ones anyway, I think the big ones are into something a bit harder).

No Richard I won't have it by then.

Murray is OS until the end of the month, waiting for him to sign it

I was disappointed because eBay wouldn't take my $303 bid, it wanted at least $305. But if Miles says it's worth $5000, he's the expert, it must be true. It's an investment better than money in the bank. I'm going to sign up for one of those sniping services and bid $5005. I've just got to try a few more passwords for Woody's eBay account first.

Jim, I thought there were plenty (one or two at least) of Burns 'Marvins' about - (Do you mean an original ?)
Have you seen the Burns 50th anniversary `Apache' ? Only 500 being made, 50 in fiesta red and the rest in white, both with gold hardware. They've had really good reviews in the guitar magazines over here.

Steve - the $5000 bid thing is supposedly a big joke, I'm pleased you didn't get it either, I don't feel so isolated now !

Do a search in the archives around 2004 for "forever family" when the thing was supposedly made.

Glad someone got it... we already made all ours'.
