Like just about everybody else in the country, I've been watching the Olympics. Night before last, NBC broadcast the finals of the women's floor exercise competition. I was surprised and delighted when Shawn Johnson began her routine with music that my daughter Kaki King contributed to the soundtrack of the movie "August Rush".

The first half of her routine featured excerpts from an original composition for solo acoustic guitar by Kaki titled "Bari Improv" and her cover of a Michael Hedges tune titled "Ritual Dance". The rest of the routine was accompanied by the movie's main symphonic title composed by Mark Mancina.

Shawn took the silver medal for her performance, but for obvious reasons, I was pulling for her to get the gold. She did go on to take gold for the balance beam last night.

I cannot tell you how proud we are that Kaki's music was used in the finals of an Olympic competition.

Best regards to all--

Dave King

She deserves the recognition. I have played her stuff for my students, and they were blown away. Most people never imagined that those kind of sounds could come from a guitar. I have also had some tourists come through this summer just raving about her. Makes me proud when I tell them I "talk" to her Dad from time to time.

Probably the same thing you were feeding Mark Cavendish during the "Tour" ;)

I missed that event and now I'm really sorry I did.

Congrats, Dave. When the routine started, my wife exclaimed "August Rush!" She's getting tired of hearing how we're best buddies and all, so I spared her (this time).

When do they start the ribbon dancing? Pray they don't use Kaki's music for that.

Well, Dweeze, given Britain's international reputation for gourmet cuisine, I don't think it was steak-and-kidney pie...or Marmite........ ;) :D

And, Papa Dave, I think there should be an Ovation "Gold Metal of the Year" award for Kaki.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. She appeared last weekend at an outdoor music festival at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. As far as I can determine, in two days of different acts, she was the only female performer.

I heard the music during the floor excercise and called everyone to the TV.
We all saw August Rush recently and knew the music. I have August Rush's soundtrack on my Ipod. Congratulations Dave and Kaki!!
