Location: Louisville, OH 44641 | Anyone out there know the differences between the 1718 and the 1537. I own a 1718 Elite and I really enjoy it. I'm surprised at all the fuss about the 1537 which appears to have a very similar configuration. Is it that much better than the 1718?

the fretboards and grade of tops are two of the physical differences rosewood for 1718 vs black walnut) 1537 has grade AAA top, vs gradeAA for 1718.
as for sound, i am unsure. maybe it is a gestalt thing? peace mike |

Differences in materials and material grade, fit and finish stuff.
(I think the Fit and Finish is better on my 1537 than on my new Adamas)
As for sound am not really familiar with 1718. |

Location: central nj | My brother has a 1718. Best ovation I ever heard, but I never heard a 1537 either. I have one on the way though!! |

Location: SoCal | I have the 1537 and the 1718-X (1991 Garris prototype of thin line saddle). Never played a regular 1718.
The 1537 and 1718-X have similar necks except that the 1718-X isn't free floating and darker border on the inlaids. Playability/action is the same. Projection is the same. Binding is obviously different. Epaulets on 1718-X look like 2-piece v. 5-piece on 1537. Stacked tone/vol on the 1718-X.
Woodier is a good description of the 1537. The 1718-X is brighter although good balance of bass to treble. 1718-X may not have AA as it is a very dense grain and sounds like a AAA would.
Personally (and backed up by a couple of guys that played both of them) - they are different but equal. The 1718-X is that good. When a former gas station operator told me I'd like it, he was right.
