So, I guess it took them 10 years to decide that the 1537 was a winner and build a few :D

Having a "pre-production" with a "serial number" is kinda of a contradiction of terms . . .

OK. Just back to California after a trip to Florida this week. So who's the winner, Mike O? Looks that way from our offical scribe's list. Mike, send an email to me at stonebobbo@gmail.com and we'll arrange for your grand prize package and lovely parting gifts.

No, Stoney. You have to compare the question, "How many 1537s were built in the first year of production, 1983?" with the answer "Nick said they may have built as many as 1000-1500". Moody doesn't say that Nick told him how many were built in both 1983 and 84, but that's how I read it. If we subtract the 750 or so made in 1984, there were 250 to 750 made in 1983. That puts most of us in the winner's circle. It also makes more sense that they made less in 83, a partial year, than they made in a full year of production in 1984.
Sometimes you guys need a lawyer to interpret this stuff. I say send Moody back to clarify the answer.

Mark, there was never a full year of production for the 1537's. At least, that's my guess. Based upon serial numbers for 1983 which tells us approximately how many guitars were built for that year, and figuring that production of the 1537's started in August (again, based upon serial numbers and averages), it looks like as many 750 may have been built that first year, although that's just a best guess.

I'm starting to think that there never was a full year of production of the 1537's. Nick said that in mid 1984 production moved from Mooseup to New Hartford. That's when the guitars were changed (rosewood fingerboards, ivroid binding, etc.). If production started in August 1983 and ended when moved in the summer of 1984, then production only lasted for 10-11 months.

Bill, do you have anything to add to this?

I'll accept whatever the official ruling is. :) My answer was for what I figured the the total number of 1537's in existance would have been for the full three years of production, figuring they ran about 300 a year, and about 250 for the one year they made 12 string 1538s. Just my guess at what it would take to run a profitable production quantity.

Let me know if I'm still the winner, and thanks for letting me play

C'mon, Moody. It was 328. I am just surprised that they would have made so many so soon, unless they liked the prototypes so much they knew it would outsell the other models. Sounds like they may have been a lot less rare than some of the other models made in 83-84. Does the figure for Elites made in 1984 include something other than 1537s and 1547s? We know from the serial number list that there were about 750 Elites made in 1984.

This is all a great guessing game without enough hard evidence to take it to court. If 750 were built in 1984, then anywhere from 250-750 were built in 1983. Can't come closer than that. You know, in thinking about it, I'll bet the number is closer to 250-500.

I'm just facinated that the total production time for the 1537's was actually less than a year.....

I'm telling you it's 328. I'm just great at picking numbers. That's why I win the lottery all the time.

I've got a buddy of mine with whom I used to go to Dodger stadium. We'd make guesses as to how many were in attendence. He'd usually be within about 50 of the correct number.

I guess that it can be safely said that the "cool" ones are going to be the Moosup made ones with the wood binding. I got no idea on the number Paul, that's why I sent you to Nick.

What's really funny...after 170 posts, we are no closer to the actual number.

it's the journey, I guess. Not the destination.

Sorry Mark, but you are wrong about this. There were 428 made.

Sometimes you just need to accept the obvious. :p
