Have you ever played your guitar so much in one event that it rendered your fingertips UNTOUCHABLE? I have flames coming from my fingertips, I swear I'm about to go soak them in ice. :( My callouses only stood 4 hours of playing and I then pushed it another half hour and now they're totally useless today.
Is there a quick fix so I can play again tonight? Please?

Cocaine/novocaine/Jack Daniels/morphine. You get my drift.

If you can numb them enough to get the gig started then adrenalin will get you through the rest. Use lighter strings. 4 1/2 hours isn't a lot.

Yep, I have to change the strings today. Um, but I do think it was Seagrams 7 that got me to this point in the 1st place!
Whew!

Option 5:

Pull your wisdom teeth and go play while stoned on 292s.

Worked for me once when I got a last minute replacement call years ago. Apparently I played quite well, though spitting blood in a bucket all night creeped out a few people.

Audiences can be so picky. It's not like you were spitting it on the floor.

YES, drinking helps me solve my problems, r problems. sdfj Hicup.

Sounds like that character from the Simpsons: Bleeding Gums Murphy.

Also, if you saw the last waltz, Robertson describes meeting an old blues guy who spits out blood. A harmonica player I believe.

Pull a "Ted Hawkins" . . .

. . . tune to an open chord and just barre it with your leather-gloved left hand:

Hey, last night was a belated New Years get together. I hadn't jammed with my brother-in-laws band in over 3 weeks OR practiced. My entire household has been riddled with some evil flu virus for over a week and a half now and that rare alcohol delving threw that "I think I'm dying" feeling clean out the window!
It was a blast and for some reason I kept thinking of all of you here at the OFC. (Wished some of y'all were here, even though I haven't met ANY of ya.)
I'm just sitting here with my fingers in a bag of iced water, smiling anyway. Ha~ only ONE fingertip hurts now. ;)

when I first started playing...I would play until my fingers would literally bleed...

my fingers got to the point where I could run them right down the strings and they would go right down the grooves withhout popping out...

I then tried thin gloves...but gave that idea up...

my fingertips are gone..nothing but solid rock hard calices on top of calices now.

I'd recommend y'pick up a copy of Ted's "The Next Hundred Years" (hard to come by, but available on CD). Does an absolutely beautiful, soulful rendition of Fogerty's "Long As I Can See the Light".

Any of you SoCal guys ever catch Ted when he used to busk on VeniceBeach??

I've only done my long stints on solid body electrics, and even then, after 4 hours, my fingers would pain. Anytime I play for a long period, I usually finger chords in different positions, and change the guitar, every so often. It does minimize sore fingers.

Another really great Ted Hawkins album is "The Final Tour" which is live in what appears to be a small club. Great stuff and like Cliff mentioned, "Long As I Can See the Light" is probably the best version of this song ever done.

Are we all going to have to wait ten years to attend your commencement, or do you think they'll skip you ahead a couple years?

LeStrange1, there is an ointment that certain tennis players I know use to help build up callouses. I can't remember what it's called, but it's OTC in the pharmacy. I'll check and let you know if you want.

OMG, Jeff, Go head!
Y'all are G'dang CRAZY, alright??? I'm off to locate Ted's "The Next Hundred Years"...I gotta hear this guy soon. I'm tryin' to be all serious, I am. Ahem...

As far as for playing with thin or rubber or latex gloves...those things would just bind all the hell up and...stuff.
What? There's an ointment? Tonight, I WANT it. Yesterday and tomorrow, I'd be too VAIN. I've never complained. Know what? I'm gonna gig tonight in hellfire after prolly about an hour but I WILL NOT STOP. Oh, man. You don't know how bad I'd love to hit the gathering with you guys!
