Location: Omaha, NE | I played the new Taylor in church last Sunday. That was fun.
I really didn't know much about the "Expression System" (Taylor's pickup/pre-amp setup) until I brought it home. They include a very nicely made cord that has a 1/4" TRS jack on one end, and a XLR connection on the other.
I had hoped to get down to church some time during the week to try it out with the mixer, but I never found the time. So I found myself plugging in for the first time with about 20 minutes to go. I'm glad everything worked!
My impression of the amplified sound is that the ES is smoother and less edgy than an Ovation. Otherwise, they were remarkably similar. The Ovation pre-amp on my Adamas puts out a little stronger signal than the Taylor.
As pleased as I am with the Taylor, I've still been pulling the Adamas out from time to time this week. Both are fun to play.

Location: closely held secret | It is less edgy, because it's not piezo alone. The only problem I've noticed with the ES is the volume (I used to play at church with someone who had one). Once we had it set at a nice picking or strumming level, if he started to play harder, the output really shot up to distortion levels quickly.
Perhaps they've fixed this on the newer models. |

Location: NYC | I'm glad you like your 714ce. You might want to check out the Acoustic Guitar Forum. There are a lot of Taylor fans over there, and one of seemingly perpetual discussions is about the ES.
Taylors are very nice guitars, though IMO they are a bit overpriced and also seem to have a lower resale value than you would expect given their high pricing. I've bought and sold two Taylors in the past year, but I still have my Std. Elite LX! That's a definite keeper. |

Location: SoCal | I must be one of the few people who's not a fan of the tradition Ovation "V" settings on my preamps (bass and treble up, mid's down a bit). To roll off a bit of the brittle sound that I get, my bass is up, mids down a bit, and treble down a bit from my mids. Gives me, in my p.a., a nice warm sound. |

There are too many instances where I've set my guitar the same way twice. |
