i was taking out a shim in my new celeb deluxe, with the op30 preamp and noticed there is nothing between the nut and the brass cradle. is their supposed to be something there? the guitar sounds good plugged in . all strings are even. i though there was supposed to be strip of piezo crystal between them.

The only thing under the saddle is the pickup, and possibly some shims. The nut is something entirely different and has nothing to do with electronics. The piezo pickup has the crystals sandwiched within, you would not see them.

i get the saddle and nut mixed up, let me rephrase the question. should there be any thing between the saddle and the cradle? the shims is under the cradle .when i took my strings off the saddle fell out of the cradle and there was nothing in between. it works fine but is this put together right or has this been taken apart before i bought it new? thanks for any replies.

Dougr,
If you look at this like a Ham sandwich (thanks, Tom & Ray) the bread is the saddle and the slot in the bridge ...

The ham is the shim(s)
The mayo (or mustard) is the pick up.

Look for a thread on this with the term "white plastic thingy". I had a problem when I tried to take out shims in my daughter's Celebrity Deluxe. The saddle also came out of the cradle and the white plastic thingy fell out. I can't remember now where the white plastic thingy goes, but it plays well now, so I'm not touching it.

Another admittedly totally irrelevant side note: God, I love this place. Between the ham, cheese and white thingy's, you just can't go wrong.

Well, you all know what I mean...

Proceed...

A fairly witty newspaper column too.
