Schroed:

A couple years ago, I was at a show at TownHall in NYC and saw Geoff Muldaur who had put together a band that plays nothing BUT Bix Beiderbeck . . .

Cool - I've only ever heard of him rather than actually heard him. Hard to find stuff over here. And I'm automatically nervous about people called Geoff, however they spell it...

All you really need to know about Bix is that Satchmo thought he was a genius. And that he played with crap musicians virtually all his short career. But faced with a choice between good musicians and good company, he took the good company. Which is why he was dead at 28. :(

We just got done setting up IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) at the New York Hilton. Gonna try to sneak over tomorrow and check out Chick Corea (with Eddie Gomez & Jack DeJohnette) . . .

I am so jealous - Chick is over here soon and I'm hoping to see him. Jack DeJ is simply the best drummer in the world. One of the all time greats.

I have been enjoying:

John Randall: Walking Among the Living (He and Bill Anderson co-wrote "Whiskey Lullaby" and his version is on the cd). Wonderful voice and great acoustic guitar player.

Patty Loveless: On Your Way Home. Brilliant.

Martina McBride: Timeless (buy it at Target; their version has 4 extra tunes. Very traditional real country covers; vintage tunes recorded with vintage instruments and vintage equipment.

Ozomatli: Live at the Fillmore

Grateful Dead: 5 CD Soundtrack from the Grateful Dead Movie (new Rhino Records Re-Issue--DVD is fun, too)

Chicago: Live at Carnegie Hall-4 CDs (New Re-Issue again from Rhino Records)

Isaac Hayes: Can You Dig It? New Stax Re-Issue

And: I am eagerly anticipating the new release from Hiromi Uehara on Telarc which will be titled "Spiral" released on the 17th. Sorry guys, she plays a piano, and she's beyond brilliant. Available in SACD, too!

Caught this act at a local music festival 2 years ago. Filled my ears with fun. Completely different from, but similar mindset to, Helen Gone.

NRBQ .... Message For The Message Age.

If you don't, it's about time.

Dan Hicks , (no relation, I'm sure) Beatin' The Heat

Harry Nilsson .... Anthology.
Hey he was the Beatles 'favourite group', what more do you need to know?

I'm sorry, PDog, but I never thought I'd hear Patti Loveless and "brilliant" in the same sentence, ever since "My tractor can't get no traction." That line is to music what "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" is to movies.

Just IMHO, of course.

"That was the summer of 1963 - when everybody called me Baby, and it didn't occur to me to mind. That was before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came, when I couldn't wait to join the Peace Corps, and I thought I'd never find a guy as great as my dad. That was the summer we went to Kellerman's."

"I don't like to lose."

J.T. Kirk

Can anybody name the movie?

By the way, Owne Wister's The Virigian is one of the greatest books of all time. Written in 1903, I have a 1913 copy. A prized possession.
