Here's my personal opinions on the Ovation stuff at NAMM. Others will disagree:

1. 1680 12-fretter Adamas. I didn't think it was possible that it could be more ugly than the pictures, but once again I was wrong. What a homely dog. The wooden shitlets are about as think as a slab of prime-rib. It probably sounds very nice, but it was too ugly to risk being seen playing it so I'll leave the sonic review to others. I would guess they are printing the FRG stickers as we speak.

2. 2080 Cateye. Basically the opposite of the 12-fretter. Looked amazing and Matt gave a great demo. Sounded wonderful through the VIP. But when he turned off the VIP I wanted to toss lunch. Not an impressive sounding instrument unplugged. Maybe it could grow on you, but my first impression is that it's nowhere near the same league as the U681, A1's, or A2's. Sorry.

3. 2006 Koallector. It was noisey in the hall, but it seemed to sound pretty nice. The countour bowl is amazing. But the overall looks really turn me off. I far prefer the Celebrity version. I imagine it will sell OK because of the bowl and the VIP, but the whole sound hole deal reminds me of Michael Jacksons skin whitening disease.

Did I like anything??? HELL YES !!!

4. The Al Dimeola and Custom Legend guitars were frigging B-E-Utilful. Especially the contour bowls. Seems like Ovation is really starting to downplay the multihole stuff and pump up the good old center holers. They looked just amazing with sound to match. Ditto on the Classic LX, Artist LX and Folklore LX. Very, very nice. I think these guitars will really sell well.

5. THE STARS OF THE SHOW. The 4 re-issues were just fucking amazing! The Balladeer, Josh, Glen and 12'er were incredible examples of what the factory can do when the suits let them. If I had the cash I would buy all 4 of these suckers. It was an extremely impressive showing of these guitars.

Dave is the Anti-Multi-holer!

But I do appreciate his honesty and I am jealous of his location (there, not here).

Did the DiMeola get the LX treatment?

THAT's a good one. Most people won't get the full humor, nice job Woody!

Maybe my post (opinions) were a little blunt. But I work in Marketing, which means that 9-5 I deal in that odd mixture of brutal honesty and white lies.

Ovation has some very nice offerings and I'm sure will find success with them. There are a few that just aren't my cup of tea. That's going to be true of any guitar maker.

I don't know. I think the older I get the less I care about specs and features and what's in this and what's in that. I know what looks and sounds good (to me). The AD and the CL guitars were very, very nice.

And, Dave, you are still my hero with lines like:

Go Seahawks!

BTW, a real highlight was seeing Al play at the Ovation 40th Party (I talking about Dimeola, NOT Pepiak). I was totally amazed watching him. Below is a photo I took at the event. There was also a warm up act.

I don't know about the VIP flowing down into other LX models. It was pretty cool, however. Interesting that it was NOT the same in the two guitars that were demo'd. The Adamas and Elites had different modeling. I think the Elite VIP had two different mic models and also a custom legend model. The Adamas VIP had some different models. It was all kind of interesting (although something I'll never use). But I can definately see how a studio musician would like it. Dave

Wow, so it was in an Elite, not just Adamas models. Wonder if it's available in a Custom Legend LX contourback? Either (soon to be) standard, or as a Factory option? I'll have to ask Al after he recovers from the Jersey - LA - Jersey culture shock.

The two guitars Matt demo'd the VIP were a Custom Elite (I think non-contour) and the 2080 Cateye Adamas. Dave

At least on Thursday, Matt was working the 2080 Adamas and the 2006 Collectors...using a Genz Benz 100w Shenandoah.

On Friday he used a red-burst Elite because it matched his shirt. I'm serious (Cliff has the photo). Dave
