from the 40th Anniversary booklet (KCG-677):

LINDA GIVES A LEGEND TO A LEGENDARY BEATTLE

Paul McCartney liked Ovation guitars a lot. So his wife Linda decided to give Paul a special Ovation for a Christmas present. She wanted the Legend model but asked if we could "dress it up" for Paul. We did.

The back of the peghead had this engraving: "Love from Linda."

How do you get this 40th anniversary stuff, are they NAMM exclusives? Can they be gotten from the factory? That's cool, Tony!

So, according to this, Linda McCartney wanting to give Paul a "special" Ovation was the genesis of the Custom Legend? If that's so, then she deserves to occupy a very hallowed place in Ovation lore, IMHO!

there were two handouts, in addition the Adamas and Hamer.

you can probably order direct by calling, then select from voice menu...

the 4" x 11" piece called "Prices and Specifications" is KCG-476; sorry, lists MSRP, not MAP. The 1618-1 GC 12-string reissue is listed as $2,699, 1627-4 is $2,599, 2006 Collectors is $2,829 with VIP-5, one-piece Cedro neck, GS bowl). This does have the pics and specs.

the 9 1/4" x 9 1/4" 40th Anniversary booklet is KCG-677 and is a well done promo piece, not a current catalog.

For what it's worth, there is an ad for the Ovation reissues in the new Guitar World Acoustic(Johnny Cash on the cover). The Josh White looks sweet!!!! I'd be interested in the GC 12-string, but I have an original exactly like in the picture.....

What's interesting is the the Deluxe Balladeer and Josh White reissues are NOT in the price guide, nor do they appear in the promotional ctalog for the 2006 40th Anniversary. Makes you wonder if they will really be produced. Both are very nice guitars.

If I didn't have the FD14..

I'd be all over the Josh White Re-Issue.

Like the color of the Glen Camble 12 string, it would be nice if Ovation produced some 6 strings in decent colors, I'd probably but another.

Is that McCartney going to be produced and sold? I'd rather have a burst, but being a Beatles fan and all...

The McCartney guitar was re-issued 2 years ago as the 30th anniversary Custom Legend. You can find them sometimes on ebay.

I agree, the Glen Camble 12 string is nice. You can get that same color on 6 string guitars.

If the 30th had been endorsed as a "McCartney" guitar like the Epiphone, Ovation could have charged $30,000 for it.

Sorry for quoting myself in this post, but after thinking about this some more, it seems like this topic may have come up a few years ago. I thought it was said then by someone (W-2, maybe) that the Custom Legend was already in production when Paul got his, thereby nullifying the notion of any direct McCartney influence behind this model. However, here we see in print--and straight out of New Hartford--that it was Linda's request for a "special" Ovation for Paul that led to the creation of the CL. If this is true, I find it very cool on a couple of levels.

First, I think this makes for a much stronger Beatles connection to Ovations than Lennon's cursory use of a 1651. Secondly, and on a more personal note, I find it deliciously ironic that the very first-ever CL may have been a lefty! ;)

The problem is they can't use McCartney's name as an "endorsee", . . . they can only his image playing the guitar.

And the only way they can use his image is because they are donating money to land mine development (or something like that), of which he's really passionate (or his wife is --- which is the same thing).

Here's what Ovation should do: Develop a limited edition Macca CL and market it overseas. Do whatever needs to be done to get around the endorsement restrictions just like the did with the recent "Lennon" 1651 RI. Make it an exact duplicate of Sir Paul's (complete with a duplicate of Linda's inscription) and charge 10% extra for the right handed version! :D :p

I am probably the worlds biggest #1 Josh White fan. I have owned 4 of them and absolutely love them. However, I've got to tell you that sonically the FD14 just blows it's doors off. Dave

Fickle Bitch.

(Although, I gotta admit that I spent more time last week playing an FD-14 than any other guitar . . . )
