Location: Chicagoland | I'm the owner of a preacher. It's got a sound very similar to an SG. Not a big fan of the neck shape ( the way it bulges out at about the 4th fret...), but I do enjoy playing it.
One thing that bothers me ( besides the microphonic pickups) is that it has very little sustain. Starting at about the 12th fret, the notes die away quite sharply. While I'm not looking for loads of sustain, I would like more than this. Are all preachers like this? Is it the plastic bridge? I had mine set up, but is there anything else that could be done to increase sustain? |

I would be inclined to think that a nylon bridge is put there to do just that, limit sustain. It also makes sense that the farther up the neck you go the less sustain you'd get, especially so with that bridge confriguration...
...sounds like it's not a guitar that suits you well. |

Sorry Jeff.
I am missing something here. What is a Microphonic pickup and what bulge at the 4th fret? |

Location: Upper Left USA | I have a BW that has previously had the brass bridge and now has the nylon one. It still has great sustain.
I would suspect string issues or a loose neck connection. W2 said, and I've seen, they used to place a slip of news print and white glue between the neck and body. I placed scriptures and Elmers in the ones I worked on. |

Location: Avondale, AZ | I have two guitars that have great substain. If you look at my list, I bet you can guess which two. The solidness and weight of a guitar have alot to do with substain. My viper and les paul both are mahogany. If your preacher is mahogany, it should stain well. Check that buldge in the neck. It sounds like it might weaken the neck/body conection. That would cause a lack of substain. Also a loose tailpiece might. |

Location: Chicagoland | The bulge is this: the back of the neck, about the first three or four frets, is really shallow, but then after that the neck get's progressivly thicker over the course of a fret or two, and then maintains it's thickness. I assumed it was jsut how they did the necks, though I suppose it could be from wear.
So is there a way for me to test wether it's the neck being loose? |
