The G string is still wearing out fast, just tried a set of different strings, some coated strings, and I can feel the same thing beginning to happen, string wearing out at the frets, again, it's around the same frets.

I guess I’m a little paranoid I'll screw something up so I may just go to repair guy and have them look at it and then set it up too. I briefly talked to a guy at the local store, He never looked at it, but he said I was playing too aggressively--bull! These fresh signs of wear are not normal and I am not getting aggressive. GC's guy is in on Sat, I bought it there, and maybe it will be a warranty thing? Any recommendations in the Detroit area for a guitar repair guy? Also, how much should it cost for a set up in general? Yes this is sucking mightily!!!!

Here in NY, a set-up averages about $40 -- give or take a few -- depending on the shop where you take your guitar. I'm sure, it should cost about the same in your neck of the woods.

Good luck.

I guess some things aren't cheaper in Boise. I think $40 is the going rate.

$40 to $50 for a setup depending on availibility of these types of services where you live, and this should include new strings. (some places try to charge that much "plus strings"... if they do, go someplace else!). Unless it's a warranty thing, you're right to ask for a recommendation... there are guys who think they know what they're doing, and then there are guys who really do know what they are doing.

Along with a set up, have them check the frets. You might have a raised spot or two (though I'd think that would cause buzzing), or an edge with too much bite.

Hate to bust your bubble unpluggedthumb, but wear at the frets is directly proportional to the amount of bending you do. If you bend a lot you must expect to have to re-string often. You're rubbing bronze or brass, a soft metal against harder steel frets.
The alternative is strings of a harder material, but doing so, if harder than frets, results in fret wear. It's cheaper to re-string than to re-fret.. believe me!
You can also expect to wear divots in the fingerboard between the frets.. given enough time.

I had never bent a string until I took a class once. We leanred to play some Jimmy Hendley or Hindrex or something song. We bent a FEW notes through out the song. Not much mind you. In NO TIME I had worn the brass windings of the D and G strings down to the core. The G string, being the thinnest string (the core is what give it strength and is thinner than the B and e) eventually broke. I had to buy a new G string and eventually whole new set of strings that semester.

$7 - $12 for a set of strings once a month or so is tollerably affordable. If you're wearing them out in a week... you're playing A LOT! Congratlations, you get to play a lot! Either way, most people can re-prioritize their budget to be able to afford a package of strings once a week.

On the flip side, if you pay somone to do the string changes for you... That DOES add up to a pretty penny! My suggestion: Find the string winder that came with your guitar, buy a wire cutter and learn to do it yourself.

The ONLY two solutions to adding life to your strings is to either stop bending OR quit playing.. Neither one a preferred option.

Let's stop for a 'reality check' unpluggedthumb, I think you're getting all upset when you don't need to.

What model is this new purchase?

What guitars did you own before this new purchase?

How many hours do you practice?

Do you play gigs? How often? How long are the sets?
