For reasons of person income I have become a closet luthier of sorts. I work on my own stuff out of necessity and personal enjoyment of being master of all that I own.

My question. I am about to become an Applause owner (if the price is right). This one is a 'Classic' model with slotted head stock, contoured in the traditional way, not in the Ovation way with shovel end. It has the electrical parts, but I don't know if they function, but I really don't care as I'm currently entirely cordless. The serial number begins 199. I'd also like to know it's approximate age. If the price is right it will be my 4th functional guitar. I have a 5th one in the wings that is literally a basket case. It is a parlor sized classical with solid spruce top, but not the best spruce in the world, rosewood sides and back, but not the best rosewood in the world, with multi stripped binding around the top. The rosette is inlaid concentric red black and white strips. It was made who-knows-when by some Spanish luthier in Barcelona that no-one has heard of. I've heard this gem described as a 'tourist grade' guitar. It's old and it's mine and... Well I digress. Back to the subject at hand.

The bridge of the Applause is pulling and there may be bracing broken or just loose. Can any of you Luthiers tell me how an Ovation soundboard can be separated from it's bowl? Does it screw off or snap off? :D
I may be able to re-glue a brace from outside, but may need to open her up to look under the hood. I want to know how much work it will be if I have to.

Finally, What does a round hole Applause bracing look like? The traditional X ala Martin? or something different?

I'll say again, I don't think you can get the top off in one piece. I might be wrong about this...

The inspection and repair may need to be done through the sound hole.

OR... you could cut out an access panel in the bowl to make life a bit easier. I have some ideas on how that could be done....

Tommy,

I am new in this forum and just saw your message. I am the editor of Guitarmaker Magazine, the publication of the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans. We recently ran an article on replacing an Ovation top. Please send me your mailing address and I will send you a copy.

Jim,
Welcome to the board. I'd be interested in your publication. I am currently building my first guitar and am doing on-going research.

Hope you stay up with the OFC Bboard...

Pushy yank - I answered at exactly the same time and my reply never came up. How did you do that?

Welcome Jim, and careful who you get into conversations with around here.

If I cared I'd be embarrassed. But no one here has any expectations of my IT skills.

Tommy,

Don't know if this will help any or not, but I have had success with a bridge lifting problem on an Ovation in the past by using a syringe and injecting epoxy into the zone of separation. Stopped the lift dead in it's tracks, and I beleive it even improved the sound projection of the guitar. I did not have any bracing issues though, it was simply stored under too much tension at the pawn shop I bought it from. Hopefully a dental mirror will show you if the bracing internally is OK.

Cheers,
Mike O
