I have a 1976 Red Ovation Electric Legend model# 1617-2 , serial # 084123. I bought it new and have the original hard shell case. It has been played very little and is in excellent condition. I would like to find out more about it and how much it is worth. I also have a Black Applause model# AA12, serial# SN126951. I got it used in good condition. I would like to find out more about it, and a value.

I agree that it's kinda funny that a self proclaimed expert is coming to us for advise, but maybe that's what sets him apart from all the other experts. Maybe he doesn't like going on what the blue book says, lord knows I put ZERO stock in it. Be kind to the New Fish! Hugh, There are a few deciding factors on the 1617s when you're trying to figure out value, but really it comes down to what a person is willing to pay. I'm sure in your line of business you understand this all too well. I myself wouldn't pay more than $300 (in great condition) for a 1617 of that vintage because I'm not a fan of the VT bracing used back then. Around 79-81 sometime (I can't remember when exactly) they switched to the "A" bracing pattern they were putting in the Custom Legends (model 1619). In my opinion that's worth an extra $100-150 just because they sound so much better. Red means nothing to me, but I know guys that go crazy over red guitars (and could care less about the bracing pattern), so.... I'm happy to not answer your questions fully any time! BTW, you're now upgraded. Please feel free to catch some more abuse from the general population as you can now post throughout the site. My suggestion, don't proclaim yourself a professional and ask for guidance on values. Damon

Also take a look at previous Sales posts here, you may find some 1617 units in the last two years. Most of us are tightwad Scholars of Frugality & Profit, myself being a good example of bottom feeding and naming high prices for my own offerings. But we do have a good time and the occasional history lesson!

I don't deal with many guitars and the ones I have sold I found out later were worth more than I got for them. A part of learning the business the hard way I guess. I was hoping by joining the Fan Club that I could learn something from you guys and be able to get help when I needed it. These are my personal guitars and I've had a hard time finding out anything about them. The price guides that I've looked at didn't list them. I didn't mean to imply that I'm a professional, I assure you I'm not. Just trying to learn.

In the past I've searced Ebay, Craig's List, Yahoo, etc.for my 1617-2 and have never seen one for sale. I've been told the Red ones are rare. I guess Glen Campbell, Mac Davis, etc. Are holding on to thier's! LOL!

Wish I had found this sight a hundred years ago. looking forward to all the friendly advice, :) . Wouldn't normally jump straight to advice but I think I can actually help Hugh, go to the links at the top of the page and look for the Ovation Tribute sight, it seems to originate in France but there is a page that lists virtually all the spec data by model, nothing about value but extremely interesting and great picture. That's how I found this club. At any rate thanks for letting me join, looking forward to contributing where possible! Kegfish

My wife and I have been researching this guitar for two weeks with no luck. She has looked off and on for over a year. Evidently the Red ones are rare. I haven't seen one for sale, or that had been sold. I even checked the list of guitars owned by OFC members, no 1617-2. In the year 2000, I was offered $2000.00 for it. I probably shoulda' took it. Wish I could find him now, Ha!; So, I took it off Craig's List, picked it for awhile, thought about the memories; Being introduced as "The Man With The Red Ovation", or Playing and singing a sad Country song and leaving 'em with tears in their eyes. Re. Model # 1617-2 Serial # 084123 And about my Black Applause Model # AA12 Serial # SN126951, I found virtually nothing. It is listed as a 1/2 size and mine is full size. I even checked Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars.
