I don't think he had a big enough car to haul them all in, though. And if I showed up with a car full of guitars, my wife would have killed me. Never mind. Bad plan. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | While we're on the technical stuff, why are "traditional" (i.e. nylon string) guitars typically made with slots, while steels are done with flat heads? Is it the amount of tension on the strings?
Just curious, since all of my steel string guitars have had flat heads (including two O's), and my cheap Mexican-made "classical" guitar has slot pegs, and doesn't hold a tune worth beans. (of course, it's probably worth a whole $20). |

Location: closely held secret | Cheap tuners are cheap tuners, no matter what direction they go.
I believe the reason for slots is both for the sharper angle over the nut, and the larger winding posts allow the strings to stabilize faster.
Of course, I could BTFOS, but I'm sure HWMUA will correct me... |

MPE (My Point exactly) in a manner of speaking.
As for the slotheads on classical I tradition is the biggest factor, which was driven by materials available. the modern "tuner" is a mechanized version of the tuning peg which was not as strong as the slot type.

Since the majority of my guitars are slots, I guess I'm just used to it (stringing). It's no chore and there is no reason anyone would scratch the finish unless they were extremely careless or a freaking idiot. The same goes for me. 4 out of my 6 guitars are slotheads. It might take a little longer,(especially the 12 strings), but it is not a problem. :) |
