If anybody's interested, there's a practically mint 1972 Legend on ebay right now with no reserve

If anybody buys this and wants to put on gold tuners, I've got a set of gold Grovers that would fit this guitar perfectly.

I have to say this is the best representation of a "Mint" 35 year old Ovation I have ever seen. This thing looks like it just came from the factory. I would say for the collectors in here this must be a fairly good piece! It is fairly early is it not??

THis is one to be proud of.

It was built in '72. I love the look of it, but I hate the sound of the VT bracing pattern. But there are those here who really like it, so I wanted to bring it to their attention. The guitar is in remarkable shape.

And it's in the Prairie Dog Hill now. Just received it and spent several hours cleaning, polishing, re-conditioning, tweaking, etc. and it is indeed spectacular. It gleams with near perfection and sings with the new pure bronze strings. A time machine. Maybe not quite as great as the pictures, but great nonetheless. Great seller who knew how to put together a proper auction with detailed pictures and good description as opposed to a lot of the horribly poor sellers these days. The guitar is indeed amazing when you think of all the other stuff made in the '70's and then compare. Who would want any of it? Cars? Avocado Green appliances? Leisure suits? Anything from Fender or Gibson both of whom tried desperately to go out of business producing crap? This Legend is the epitome of cool; was then, still is. The pups will hear prairie lullabies and songs about hooty owls and nightbirds tonight.

Oh, just one more thing. Thanks to moody, pi for putting up the message and link to the auction. My radar is alway up on eBay auctions as I watch a lot and buy a guitar here and there, but on that particular day, I had not looked at the new listings. I was out all day, got home late, "opened one up" and looked at the fan club, went to the auction, studied the pictures and did the "buy it now" as the bids were starting to come. Have been looking for one of these for a long time and it's way better than I thought I would get. The tip really helped and was appreciated. I stayed up way past my bed-time last night with the Legend.

P.D., you're welcome. I'm glad it went to a good home. Let me know if you have any interest in the gold tuners I mentioned earlier. I have no idea why your guitar has chrome tuners on it. They really should be gold....

Paul,

I've come to the conclusion that early on in the transition period, when the 1117 was being transformed from the Deluxe Balladeer to the Legend, that some very early Legends left the factory with chrome tuners. I used to have a '73 Legend that was about as pristine as Prairie Dog's (there's a pic in my gallery), and it too had chrome Ovation tuners. I bought it from the original owner who swore the chrome tuners were on it when he bought it new in '73.

Yeah, this guitar looks all original, and the chrome tuners are very cool on it, so think that it was shipped this way. If I could find a set of old style, US made, domed back Rotomatics like this in plain nickel finish, then I might compromise my virtue and change the tuning machines out. It sounds great and seems to have been played quite a bit, but handled gently.

As far as I can recall, the model 1117 had the chrome grovers in 1970-71 timeframe and then when they tacked on the name LEGEND in '71 they changed it to gold tuners and 15 diamond inlays. Dave

I'd really love to have the opportunity to compare the tones of the various bracing patterns. My A brace Legend puts out so much low end that it would make a Martin D blush. Yeah, I really did say that.

Dog, stay with the tuners that are on the guitar. Old Grovers are great tuners.
