Location: Rocky River, Ohio | I really like the gibson conditioner, never used the string cleaner though...
recently i've been using the dunlop system 65 stuff, their ultimate lemon oil is very nice.
The guys at the ovation factory use the dunlop too.

Clean the fret wire with WD-40, then clean the the fret board and fret wire with naptha, let it dry, should be less than .5 hour, then replenish with plain old mineral oil. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | I like the lemon oil (I think mine's Fender brand) on wood bodies - cleans 'em up and makes 'em smell purdy too!
I didn't know about WD-40 to clean with, and what exactly is naptha? |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | Naptha is a solvent. A lot less noxious than mineral spirits. You can use it in your house, no problem, though it is flammable.
Mineral oil is only remotely related to automotive oil. Get the mineral oil from the pharmacy, do not use automotive oil.
These will effectively clean your fretboard and are cheap and easy to obtain.

Location: Utah | daveinoz, fwiw here's my totally amateur opinion. String cleaners are a waste. If the string has buildup on it, it's due to be changed out. By the time there's gunk in the windings, the plain strings have corroded.
I use Alvarez fretboard cleaner/wax on my guitars and like it. It's stuff I bought in 1977 when I got my Alvarez 12 string, and it is an aerosol carnuba wax and cleaner. I like the way it works and will buy another brand to replace it when it's finally gone (the wax is starting to gunk up and it doesn't spray very well anymore).
I don't think you could go wrong using the Gibson products, but there may be equally good stuff out there at competetive prices. |
