Ok... after a trip to the beach this Sunday, I decided that I want to get a travel sized guitar for my little adventures. Fast forward to lunch break today. I go into my local big box music store and try what they have in stock.

Wanted to try a Ovation Trekker, but the salesguy looked at me like I had two heads...needless to say, they didn't have one.

1) Baby Taylor 305-M (Made in Mexico) Could have passed for a factory second as the bridge was horrible discolored.

2) Little Martin (Made in Mexico) Needed fret leveling or setup, horrible fret buzzing.

3) Carlo Rebelli Mahogany Something (Made in China) Actually, this beat the other two in the sound department (don't get me wrong, it sounded as good as a little guitar could), played very well, and was 1/2 the price. I was really shocked, as I have always thought of using those guitars as kindling for a fire.

All that being said, I think I still might want the Trekker, but wanted a little user feedback. Your thoughts and where is the best place to order? Thanks guys!

I have a Trekker I ordered from Al.
I'm very happy with it. In fact...it's sitting under my work desk here as I type.

I would love to be able to play a work, but that will be allowed when you know what freezes over or they finally decide to use direct deposit instead of holding us hostage for our pay checks! :)

Stonebobbo has a Traveler guitar that is a fascinating design, but not too useful if you want to play for others. He has some sort of mini amp. I just sent my daughter an Applause AA12, a 1/2 size that sounds OK. I tried a Yamaha that was similar to the Martins and Taylors, but didn't sound as good. The Martin Backpacker is pretty useless because you need a strap to hold it. I would think the Applause AA10 would be the same. Do a search for travel or backpack on this forum. I got lots of advice from different people a couple months ago.

I own 7 travel "guitars" of various sizes. Scale lengths from about 13 to 19 inches. No issues with any of them. Two are acoustic/electric, but to be honest the real beauty is in the unplugged sound. They are not loud, but definately can attract a crowd. Close your eyes, strum away and the stress and worries of the work day just seem to melt away. You instantly feel the warm ocean breezes, sand between your toes and you can almost hear the palm trees swaying in the wind. The best deals are Bushman, Kamaka, Lanikai and Kala. Try it, you'll like it ...

I found 2 applause travel guitars about a week ago. AA13 acoustic only and AE13. They sounded pretty good. I may buy one or both if I can get the price down to my liking. Scale length is 23 inches, so they are tuned to standard pitch.

Try an olympia papoose. The Martin sucks. I liked the Taylor, but I may have had good luck. If you search "travel" guitar here you'll find a lot of discussion on this topic.

an4340,

This weekend I gutted my Papoose solid body (OSP1) and rewired it for Vol/Tone. Now it runs a little more adjustable in the tone.

Play it anywhere with a Danelectro mini-amp, although there are several others out there.

I like those miniamps. One of my collegues keeps a telecaster in his office and plugs it into there and then from there into a computer speaker.

I thought about swapping out the electronics but I like walking up to a hotel TV or a computer speaker or a stereo system (with the right cable) and just plugging in. When they wear out, or when I get bored, so far not yet, I'll replace them with a tone/vol setup. Probably something sexy like those torres engineering midrange boost or cut things. Volume would be just plain volume.

I just played a little Fernandez with a pickup, a speaker built into the body and a battery. Kinda fun.
