This sounds like a silly question, since serial numbers are on the web, but the numbers don't add up. I have a Custom Legend, 1619-4 serial # 313423, blue label, truss adjustment under the soundhole. The web puts this guitar at 1985-86. I graduated high school in 1984, and had this at LEAST one year before that, and maybe closer to 2. My best recollection is summer 1982. I got it straight from the factory(I knew someone who worked there), not a store. I still have the original KAMAN factory bill of sale, but the guy didn't write down a date. I'd appreciate any info.

313423 doesn't fall in that number bracket. The pull down serial # feature on this web site puts it @ 1985, But I owned it a couple of years (at least) earlier.

I can't relate to anyone who had a Custom Legend in high school or who went to high school in the 80's for that matter. If you'd have gone to high school in the 60s, I would guess that your memory is fuzzy.
Don't know how the serial number list could be that far off. Check it against the Ovation website and see if there's a typo on one of the lists.

The Ovation web site matches this one. I don't know why. Maybe Ovation didn't pay too close scrutiny back then to serial #'s, much the same way it's hard to figure out some Gibson years. My brother works at Kaman (helicopters, not guitars). I was playing mine when he handed me the Ovation newsletter with the Then New 1983 Collectors guitar and thinking the shallow bowl was so strange(I now own one of these and love it). As far as a Custom Legend in High School goes, It was a factory 'second' (for something I couldn't find)purchased at the factory by an employee. All those discounts added up, and I couldn't pass on it. Speaking of employee discounts, I just aquired (via my brother again) a brand new Legend LX 12 string for 450 bucks. (also a second - It has a pinhead size mark on the underside of the neck near the binding. He had to point it out, I couldn't find it). Anyway. Any insider with serial # info that might help me out would be great.

my appologies -- juggling a ton of stuff here at work. I meant to put in two lines in my original post:
291457-302669 = 1983
303320-356000 = 1985
Anyway, my bad, sorry about that.

Not sure why there is a year lag, nor why the reference table has those two intervening SN series for Elite's and Balladeer's Only.

Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable members will clear this up for you. It is also possible, that since it was bought directly from the factory, that could have some bearing on it's desiginated SN?

I was wondering that too. If serial numbers are actually related to production date, or maybe applied as they are shipped out the door to suppliers? I'll check my LX number tonite (also a factory purchase).

I suspect the serial numbers relate to production dates. My 1771LX was drop shipped from the factory to me in early January of '04. It had a serial number of 577772. The serial number chart says:
571884-579654 2003

I am sure they are production date. Otherwise they'd have to wait until shipment to put in the label and put on the strings. Sign up for the factory tour and ask bunches of questions. Wish I lived that close.

Production date makes the only sense. In any case, I was playing this '1985' guitar in late 1983.
