I recently picked up the "Have you Heard Jim Croce Live " CD. I searched the site and see that their are quite a few members that enjoy his music. As a novice I decided to try to learn "Operator" I have the TAB for the song but when I listen to the song and try to play along with the CD, the music sounds flat. I tried tuning down 1/4 step nope, tried putting a capo on and moving it up and fret board nope, How can I tune my guitar to the song or is Jim using some other alternate tuning, of course I'm sure just it's me. Any tips appreciated.
Mike :D

What key is your TAB in, I believe the original recording was in G.

Does the entire song sound off key or , say portions of the verse only?

Operator is one that I don't know, but all the other Croce songs I know are regular tuning. Hard Way Every Time is capoed up 2 frets on the recording, but not on the dvd.

The entire song is off, I will try and tune to that song. I'm also trying to Learn Lover's Cross, and it sounds right on. So I tinks it must be the recording. these are of course Old live recordings probably no real studio mastering in their original format so they could, be suspect

I learned a couple by studying the dvd. At least you can see what fret he's on sometimes and go from there. I know Dreamin, Hard Way, Time in a Bottle, New York's, I'll Have to Say I Love You. I'm getting parts of Photographs and It Doesn't Have to Be That Way. Listen to his bass runs. That's typically his thumb.

You gotta remember that in 1972, there were no sophisticated tuners in the studios. My guess would be that in the studio, if an orchestra wasn't playing, they'd tune to the piano. There's no guaranty that it would be smack on.

That's a great DVD and I wish I was at the point in my playing to be able to watch someone play and pick it up, but not yet! I just bought this dvd and hope to learn a little from it.

You know I just saw that CD demo and I was a little intimidated by it,$30.00 I don't really think I'm ready for that. My major problem is I don't go out and jam with others, Occasionally like once a month I see my buddy who has been playing Ovations since he was knee high. But he's really not a teacher. I told him just last week I was trying to learn some Jim Croce, his comment was, isn't that a little dated. Huh, and this was coming from a guy who Last month was trying to teach me "Children of the Sun" By Billy Thorpe. I told Los (my Buddy) I didn't want to DATE Jim I just wanted to learn a song or two. :D

I had a buddy once that suggested that Jim Croce was a little dated. His parents still keep his room just the way it was the day he disappeared.

Well, he may not smell very good right now, but his music holds up well. His son, A J Croce may be a little more current for some.

You'll notice on the DVD that there are numerous songs that aren't tuned to pitch... Maury and Jim just tuned to each other's guitars at times and if they were close it was fine with them... All of the work that Jim did in the studio is tuned to pitch but not all of his live stuff..

Jim and Maury never used any kind of alternative tuning as best I can hear. Maury usually capoed up to play his fantastic lead parts, and most of the were done using the "D" or "A" formations, he just used the capo to get the key right. At least that what it sounds like to me.
Don't get offended, but I hate using tabs. I've found out a lot of them aren't correct, especially when trying to tab an intricate finger-style part as would be the case in Croce's music. My son swears by them, though, we always have some good natured banter about it.

The DVD is much better for learning Croce songs than any tab I've found. Stephent28 sent me a good one for Time In a Bottle, though.
