| Hello,
I am interested in getting an Ovation. I went to a music store and they told me they would sell me the USA-made balladeer 1861 (old stock but still "new" without a tuner) for $500 no case. I could also get them to order me a Pinnacle CU 147 (Korean-made with AA spruce top) for $399 The USA-made sounds like a good deal but I want the guitar to hold its own acoustically and I'm worried the s/shallow bowl might inhibit this even though it sounds good. The CU 147 has a medium bowl which I understand to be more ballsy unplugged compared to a shallow bowl. Which should I go for??? Although the Pinnacle has a mid-bowl....pass on it... you can do much better. |

Location: CT | All new USA Ovations come with case, but some music stores sell the guitar w/o case, and sell the case to someone else. Sweet deal for the store. Pass on the pinnacle and the shallow bowl. You should be able to buy a USA Legend (a few years old in good to excellent condition) on eBay for 500.00 or less, with whatever bowl size you prefer. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | There's a red Legend on ebay for sale by Paul Blanchard. He's Roundback on ebay. I think the buy it now is $499. Buy it so I don't. Paul is an honest guy who knows his Ovations and probably other guitars, too. That would be a great first guitar. It would have been a great 10th or so guitar. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | Ebay is the place to go these days for a great used Ovation. Skip the shallow bowl and look for a Legend or an Elite. Here\'s a nice Elite

| Mitchrx, That Elite is one of the best values on ebay right now. Excellent condition and no reserve. It would be worth buying and sending to Ovation for just a minimal restoration. Nice guitar. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | That's another excellent choice that may depend upon whether you like the single or multiple soundholes. This board is way too helpful. If I was in your position right now, Greg, I'd probably by both the Legend and Elite and then I'd be in real trouble. |

| If I had the bucks I'd bid on it and I don't really like multiple soundholes, but I know an '87 Elite is going to vibrate big time; this sound board is dry and very stable. Plus with a 5-piece neck, you can do alternative tunings with no worries. This one should get some serious bids. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | My first ever Ovation guitar was a 1861, which I still own today. Honestly, I'm quite happy with it, but don't expect too much from it unplugged. The guitar does come to life when it's amplified. If you want an excellent sounding guitar unplugged, shoot for a deep-bowl Ovation. For about $500 bucks, there are many great deals being offered in the Sell/Trade section of this website, or on ebay. As far as I know, the U.S. made models should come with a hardshell case.

Location: Chehalis, Washington | I agree to an extent - being one of the only real fans of shallow bowls in the OFC. My first was an 1869 Custom Legend, and I played it unplugged only for seven years and never had a complaint. It doesn't have as good of projection and overall volume as the deeper bodies (obviously), but it fits my playing style just fine. And, plugged in, it sounds just great.
Decide whether you like the idea of single or multiple holes better, and how much depth you want to work with on the guitar. I have a shallow 1869 in real nice shape on ebay right now (check the For Sale section), and also own one of the Elite T's in a deep body and love playing both.
The only problem with this board, as Mark mentioned, is there can sometimes be TOO much good advice. Pick a flavor and start - it doesn't have to be your last. |

The 1869 is a very nice shallow bowl. A real boomer! I have one and I love her. You should check his guitar out. I was shy of the shallow bowl until I played her. Great sound and the carved bridge is very sweet. |
