Someone here was looking for a white 12 string a few weeks back ... was that you Pokeypup? If so, there's a nice one on eBay right now ...

Nope.... it was me.

The story of my 12 string again:

I bought it in '95 from a music store in MN.
I moved to Colorado in '96.
Had some terrible legal hassles with the ex, so I had to sell (my one and only time in a pawn shop) to cover attorney fees.
Music store here bought it off of the pawn shop.
Somebody passed a stolen check to buy it from the music store.

So in the end, it wound up being stolen property.

Now, about the one in the pic... it's hard to tell by the picture, but mine had a pearl white top - this one looks creamier colored.

I sent the seller a question asking about what color it really is... so let's see.

If it happens to have the pearl top, this would be the first one I've seen since mine...

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

:)

Damn.

He says in his description that it is a pearl top.

If so, this is identical to mine - gotta wonder if it made it's way to Hawaii in the past 10 years.

He doesn't say that it was bought new or used from that store in Hawaii...

I sent him an email asking for the serial number... I hope he fesses it up so I can do some research and see if by chance this guitar started out in a store in MN.

Let us know. After almost recovering my 1869 on ebay from Tennessee, I would believe almost anything about where a guitar could end up. Did you have a record of your guitar's serial?

I think I can track down the store owner here that sold it.... He was mighty upset about taking a $1,200 bad check at the time - and he told me a few years ago that he had the serial number for it.

Soooo... I'll try contact him tomorrow - he's still around town - but he closed his music store last year or so. I had a little retail shop right next door to him in 2001 - and I know a few other merchants in town that probably have his number.

If it's got the pearl top, this sure looks like it could be mine. The mid 90's is exactly the right time.

Does anyone here have any way of looking up how many white ones were made? Or is there a contact person I could reach at the factory to find out if the odds are good this one is mine - or maybe I'll find out a few hundred were made.

I honestly have never seen another pearl white 12 like this since mine.

Has anyone else?

This makes me sick to see as well as a little hopeful that maybe karma is flying back around and I might be able to get my actual guitar back.

That would be waaaaaaaaaay cool.

Another million dollar question... or two....

Let's say I actually sent in the warranty card on my guitar back in '95. Would the company be able to pull up those records?

Otherwise, based on the serial number, would Ovation know what store originally bought it?

The company would still have your card on file. I don't know if they can find out store info.

They can look up store info based on the serial, but not the other way around. That may work out good for you, because if you call John Budney and give him the serial number from this guitar, he can look up exactly when it was sold (to the dealer) and who it was sold to. Bonus if you sent in the warrantee card, because then it would be registered to you anyway.

Best shot: get the number from this one, call Ovation, and don't get your hopes up!

Good luck!

Update:

I talked to the seller for about 20 minutes this morning - heckuva nice guy. :)

He bought the thing in 2001 from a guy that supposedly bought it from a guitar store that went out of business.

By the description, it could be my old guitar.

Two things that were really weird -

1. He said when he got it, he thought it still had original strings on it. Well, I bought it in '95, then life when downhill for me so it didn't get played much - and I don't think I ever changed strings on it before I sold it in '96.

2. He said it just has some fine pick marks - and to be honest, I'm not a pick-mark maker. :) BUT.. I think there may have been some pick marks on it and that's why I got it so cheap in the first place.

It's hard to remember some of this stuff, because it was really painful to sell that guitar - it was the one good thing I had done for myself, and it hurt bad to sell it. It was kinda like giving birth... LOL Some memories get lost.

Anyway... I'm off to try to reach someone at Ovation to see if I can find out more.

Sally,
John Budny is great. Saw him at the tour and e-mailed him about my Adamas 1597. I thought that my Adamas could be an FRG due to the price I paid. He helped me confirm that my guitar is not an FRG. As a result I got a great deal on it.

Hey Phil...

About the same time you were writing this, I was leaving John Budny a voicemail.

I'll send him an email as well...

Thanks for the info.

Sally,
Good luck with the guitar, whether it turns out to be yours or not. It's amazing the journey an instrument can take. In 2004 I bought back a guitar from a store in California (after not meeting the reserve on an eBay auction) that I had sold around 1996. I'm in Florida. I would love to know the story of where that guitar traveled!

If you don't get yours back, I hope you get one like it you're happy with.

I'm still hoping to replace the Guild f45-CE I also sold at the same time as the other guitar.

Good Luck!

Well...

If this isn't mine, I believe it is a twin.

I'm 99% sure mine had a brown bowl like this one and everything else is the same.

I'm thinking that I want the thing either way.

Damn G.A.S.
