Hi all:

So I bought the Monster iStudioLink cable after our little discussion about easy ways to record in GarageBand... but I plugged my guitar into the computer using it and didn't get anything. I played the guitar but GarageBand didn't do anything. Has anyone ever used one before? If so, are there specific settings in the program you need to use?

The package says plug in, open the program and play... damn, why's it never as easy as they make it sound???

Vcnyls,

I'm extrapolating here a bit as I don't have the same type of input you do. I'm running OS X (Tiger) .. hopefully you are too...

First off, make sure you've got the system audio input set to the line-in port..

System Preferences -> Sound -> Input
highlight/double-click Line In in the source box
make sure the volume is in the middle or so to start with

Now go into Garageband and bring up Preferences -> Audio/MIDI and make sure "Built In Audio" is selected for input. This may be your only option.

Now in Garageband, click Track -> New Track -> Real Instrument -> Guitars -> No effects

You should see a new track show up in the main window. Set Monitor to On if you want to hear, but watch out for feedback. You might have to lower the volume or turn monitoring off.

Now if you turn up your preamp and strum, you should see activity on the level meters for that track. make sure the red record "light" is on for that track, hit the Red Record button at the bottom and play away. To stop recording, click the red record button again or hit the play button. then you can rewind the track and play it back, loop it, or whatever.

hope that works!

Thank you!!! That worked great! The sound's coming through loud and clear.... now I can record some stuff and make my loved ones suffer through my guitar playing even when I don't have a guitar handy!! :D

Thanks again!
