Joined: June 2006 Posts: 1 | Hi to all. I am new to the club and for that matter, new to Ovation. but my parents were into the Collector's series since the first one in '82. They were lucky enough to obtain the Collector's model for every year from '82 to '97, way up here in ND. Now, unfortunately, my father is suffering from Alheimers and so we are looking for a way to sell the entire set they collected, as a set. We thought of Ebay, but that is risky from what i hear. Can anyone out there provide a rough idea of what such a collection is worth, as a set? I've tried to go through the original dealer, but with no luck so far. And other guitar collectors I know, don't know Ovation. Sorry if my first posting is a sad story and a "for sale" one at that, but I didn't know where else to go for a true appraisal. They haven't been played, are still in the original cases, and being properly stored. thanks to anyone who can help.

I doubt you'll find much intrest in them as a complete set. but this is the place to ask. If you search, you'll probably find information & values for most of them here. The problem is, that as guitars go, there are some that *I* like, and there are others that I think suck. This is going to be especially true for some of the collectors. I guess what I'm saying is selling them as a set, you'll like get less then the value of each individual guitar (much like a liquidation) than if you were to sell each one in premium condition to true collectors and players. For instance, if you have a 1997W, I'm sure you'll get allot of intrest for that one particualr guitar, but there are other's that just don't stand out in the crowd. I would strongly suggest you distribute them amongst your family, and perhaps some of your dad's friends. Any other players in the family? what about you? Do you play? If your dad is still able to help choose who gets them, it would probably be fun for him. If you must sell them, doing so here includes a lifetime membership in one of the greatest guitar comunities around. No one here will take advantage of you and your family. You'll get a fair price for them. I truely hope somone does step forward to try to keep the collection together.

Like Fred, there are Collector's Editions that I am partial to...'97w,'92,'87. The others I passed on. I think your Collectors' are of more value if they stay together as a complete set. I suggest that you change your Topic Subject to, "Mint Collector's Edition Set('82 to '97)", and get some input from the OFC Elders. Soon the sun will rise and the Elders will return from their Vision Quests. They will then enlighten you. You will meet a great set of knowledgeable, opinionated people here on the OFC who are passionate about Ovation guitars. Considering Ovation's production numbers, we represent only a small fraction of Ovation owners. I think there are at least a few "Set Collectors" out there. Hopefully the members here can help you find them. There is a photo gallery that you can upload pictures to. If you need help just email me.

There are some major collectors in Japan, so maybe that is a better option. Selling each guitar individually would bring the most value as each would find it's way into the individual hands of someone who desired it. This will be a lot of work. My advice would be to contact a dealer who may be interested in brokering the transactions for you (basically sell them on consignment). Contact Al Pepiak at Lost Art Vintage Instruments, who may be able to help you. Good luck, Dave

Traditionally 'SETs' of things sell more than individual pieces of 'the SET' when they were originally sold as 'a SET', because one doesn't have to look for the missing pieces. The collecters Ovations weren't sold as a set, but as individual pieces, and some are more desireable than others. If its money you are most interested in, your best bet is to sell them one at a time, probably on eBay, and stress that they are 'as original' and 'Unplayed' and in 'mint condition' and take some very detailed pictures. Members here buy and sell on eBay all the time with good results and would be willing to give you advice on details like packing, or shipping costs etc.

I for one would jump at a chance to buy a collection like this if it hadn't been such a dismal business year. It would be great way to jumpstart a collection!! Good luck to you. Dano

What difference does it make if someone makes an offer if he is a dealer or not? We often pipe up and say we are interested in a guitar or "set" just to stake the claim. Then negotiations move to more private conditions. Maybe I am off base here, but I don't see the problem.

I'd guess that someone who was really into the whole series would have most of them already and would be looking for one or two. Check out Photogazer's gallery as a great example. Good luck with your Dad. Where are you in ND? I lived in Carrington for a few years in the 60s. My Dad was hospital administrator there. I also bought my Ultra GS from a guy in Bismarck who said his Dad had introduced him to Ovations. My Dad, unfortunately, could barely carry a tune in a bucket.
