Location: NJ | I have never seen anything that bad, close but not that bad.
Even when you take great care to package something it can get damaged but I have a fantastic track record with shipping. Things do happen but not often.
These types of things tend to be the exception than the rule. |

And the driver.... Probably some kid, but who would drop off a box he just ran over and hope it would go be OK? |

| Isn't a vintage '66 Martin worth big bucks? A couple grand maybe, plus the stress of it all...wonder what kind of 'insurance' Fedex is going to cop-out with? The shape the guitar is in now, Fedex would be hard-pressed to prove it wasn't Mint/Collectable to begin with... |

Location: Indiana | I think shipping by nature has the potential to damage stuff but I haven't seen anything like this either. I feel for the guy. Many guitar sellers on ebay will only ship by FedEx. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | There are many companies that do a great job of getting your stuff there fast and safe. Heck even the government can do OK if you pay them enough. The difference is how these companies deal with the fraction of a percent of the time when things get screwed up. In this regard, FedEx and UPS are head and shoulders above the rest, in my opinion. I personally insist on FedEx for all my personal shipments and ebay sales. Dave |

Location: SoCal | Came across this in Fedex Terms of Service when Mark's 1537 was lost/damaged on its journey down from Canada (Fedex International Terms have a little more verbage):
"Shipments (packages or freight) containing all or part of the following items are limited to a maximum declared value of US$500:... Guitars and other musical instruments that are more than 20 years old, and customized or personalized musical instruments."
Stephen has turned me into a fan of USPS Priority. So far, the boxes have arrived without a mark on them... in contrast to boxes arriving via Fedex and UPS usually looking like they have been beat to sh*t.
UPS is still the economical choice with proper packaging and insurance for a replaceable instrument. Eventually you will have a damaged shipment. I always ask myself if saving $20-$30 on shipping is worth the hassle when damage does occur. |

Not that I do much shipping but thanks for that little tidbit of info. I luckily have never any problems with Fedex or UPS. I do remember having to insure 2 inch master reels that were being shipped overnight by Fedex that were also insured by them somewhere in the ballpark of 80-100k.They were familiar with shipping master audio tapes and thank god I had no problems. |

Location: Hicksville, NY | I shipped a guitar only once, and did it through USPS priority. Since I didn't hear any complaints from the addressee, I'll "safely assume" that it got there in one piece.
As far as receiving guitars, only UPS has/had delivered them on my front door, and I must be fortunate that all three guitars arrived without any problems. The last one being my only O coming back from the Mothership, when I dropped it off for repairs during the OFC Tour. (BTW, my sincere thanks to Mr. Budny for making my guitar look, feel, play and sound remarkable all over again! :) ).
I feel sorry for the gentleman who lost his guitar. Those pictures were not pleasant to look at... |
