Trolling around on eBay, looking at ukes, I see that the Applause ukes are less expensive than a lot of others. Are they decent instruments?

I've got an Applause soprano, and it's . . . .

. . . "okay" . . .

Y'get what y'pay for.
There're better out there . . .

(The koa one that Templeman recently got was nice, tho.)

That was a tenor. It's pretty mediocre acoustically, but it's killer plugged in.

I have an Applause uke.
I have played much better ones but still find that the little roundback serves my needs nicely.
I think they are a good value.

So am I, so it may be a fit. Actually there are a few koa's around the same range, so that may be better. Thanks for the info, I'll pack it away for when the time comes.

Ukuleles are like lawnmowers. SERIOUSLY! Go shop for a mower. Not a ride on tractor, just a walk behind mower. Prices range form $100 to $1000. The rules (ukuleles and lawnmowers) are just like anything else:

1. You get what you pay for
2. If possible buy slightly more than you "need"
3. The more you use it, the more you will appreciate the better (more expensive) ones

Applause ukuleles are great instruments for the money. In the $100-200. range you can't do much better tha Applause. If you expect them to sound and play like $300. or $500. ukuleles you will be disappointed.

If you go "upscale" slightly to the $200-$350. range there are some great instruments. The Martin S0 is one of the best sounding. Lanikai and Bushman are fantastic values in mahogany, spruce or koa. The ones with solid top and laminate side/back sound fine. The fit/finish, playability, intonation, hardware quality, of these is significantly better than the cheapies. $500. and up you really start talking about some nice instruments. I've got a Kamaka tenor which is just amazing. And it just keeps going from there ...

While the applause ukes may not have the acoustic sound of some others in that price range, they more than make up for it in "cuteness". Plugged in, it's a whole different ballgame. The Applause sopranos have kind of a cheap passive system, but the Applause tenor has a full on OP24+ system that's just amazing.

So, not sure if I answered your question or not.

Dave

I can vouch for MasterTempleman's offering.

I've seen/played the one that went to MasterKeller when Temp was at my house prior to the OFCTour . . .

I was utterly amazed at the fit/finish/sound for the money.

Cliff, the one Kim got was laminated Koa, quite nicely figured and flamey. These new ones are entirely solid but the koa is pretty plain looking, which is why they are so affordable. They sound great.
