My son who is 11 is wanting to take guitar lessons. I have a roundback Ovation, circa. 1982 model. I havent played in years so Im real outta tune with the guitar world, but Im gonna let him use it with the understanding to take care of it.
My question is, what kinda strings should I get to help him get started? I was looking at either phosphor bronze wound or silk and steel, but am open to any suggestions from you folks in the know. Thanks for any suggestions.

This is one of the rare times that I would advise using special lights (.11) or extra light (.10) gauge strings. Usually heavier strings equal better tone. But since he is a beginner, using lighter strings will make things easier on him till he gets his fretting hand stengthened.

As far as brands, there are many opinions. I like Elixir nano-webs because they have a nice tone and last a long time, this might be a good thing for your son. But I'm sure a cheaper non-coated string like Martin SP's or Adamas 1818's would be just fine.

I find the #1 complaint I get from beginners is HURTING FINGERS. I usually recommend any brand of Silk and Steel strings in a situation like this. Low tension...VERY easy on the fingertips! That's the main thing for a beginner. You don't want to do anything to discourage someone just starting out.
After a bit of progress you can switch to lights. John <>{
