I like the idea mentioned earlier for those of you ordering new guitars...
Wait an extra week and get whatever you were getting anyway with the iDea instead of the OP-whatever.

Just got back from a quick trip to Maine. Saw the comments about dumping on Ovation. I sure hope no one thinks I am not inline with this new release... Great Idea, Great Guitars. I personally think they could make a "killing" by introducing this technology to those of us who may not be in the market for a new guitar again. There are a lot of musicians who own guitars already.....right?? and musicians who might like to use this new high teck stuff through their favorite guitars (electric and acoustic) without having the factory install done to do it or having to buy another guitar.

Once again Ovation is on the cutting edge! I think this is fantastic. I also think they could broaden their influence with a small portable unit. Hey, you know someone else will do it.

Just clearing up my point a little. Other than that, Maine was just beautiful this time of year.

Does it have a built-in mic, to record voice as well? You might get an iDea for a song, not just a riff.

I rarely talk about guitar stuff with SWMBO anymore. She tunes out thinking that I'm just trying to justify another purchase. She's right.
Anyway, the technology of this little thing really intrigued me, so I managed to work it into a conversation. She actually expressed enough interest to ask if it could be used in more than one guitar.
To me this, like the VXT and a few other things, is a sign that Ovation is trying to stay ahead of the curve. They aren't going to do that by making limited edition or custom high end guitars, but it's great that they can do both.

I was noodling around on workshoplive tonight and I went to the songwriting section - there in the very first lesson was Susan Mazer using the iDea guitar! In one of the subsequent lessons, she uses it by playing a lead over a rhythm that she had previously recorded.

That's pretty cool - and excellent for practicing! Just record some chord changes and you're off and running. NOW I want one!

Okay, so what I want to know is, what is the actual memory size on this? 100 minutes of storage in MP3 isn't a lot, when you consider the size of an ipod these days. Also, is this memory size affected by jam tracks and lessons downloaded to the iDea?

I like the concept...wouldn't be too hesitant to put it in my 12'er as an occasional swap-out for the Pro-Studio. Does the $299 preamp kit come with the 1/8" jack and all the connections, or would you have to send a guitar in for a retrofit?

Al,

Do you know if the 1/8" jack is hardwired or a plug-in on the preamp?

Website says there is a 1/8 jack on the bottom of the guitar. A assume near the regular 1/4 jack. We'll find out 5 weeks from tomorrow.

The last page of the Quick Start Guide shows the placement of the 1/8" AUX-IN jack.

Yup. There it is, right next to the 1/4 jack.

'course you don't HAVE to use the aux input, so drilling a hole in your bowl isn't necessary required.

Well Dave, when you get it, plug in the USB and see how much memory they put in it. I can't find it in any of the specs.

It depends on what bitrate they record at.

Approximation:

File Size in MB = (Bitrate in kbps x Playing Time in minutes) / 140

So if they say it can record 100 minutes, and they're using a bitrate of 128kbps then that's about 90MB capacity.

I wonder if they ever considered putting an additional USB port on the inside so that you could just reach in thru the access door (providing it has one) and plug in a GeekStick to "up" the memory . . . .

My FreeHand tablet has that capability.
In addition to the on-board memory, there's a USB port where I can plug in a 2-Gig GeekStick, and have scads of memory to play audio files out to the PA during "break" . .

That would require a can change. Of course, if you're drilling a hole for the 1/8" jack, cutting a hole in the back of the can's no big deal...

... oh, and thanks for that, Dave. I considered calculating it based on the bitrate, but had no idea what an engineer might consider "quality" audio in the mp3 world...

128MB is about what I was figuring. Figure an ipod holds approximately 250 songs per 1gb of memory, at 3-4 minutes each...puts that 100 minutes of recording time in the 128 range. Al, the next time you talk to Rick Hall, would you ask if the downloads, demos, and tracks cut into the on-board recording memory, or are they stored elsewhere?

If so, you'd want to be pretty careful how much you download at a time, or you'll quickly cut your recording time down to 10 to 20 minutes.

remember, all recordings/tracks are downloadable/uploadable via usb, therefore storage is only limited by your computers hard drive.

Right, which means that you can obviously have way more data than is on the preamp at any given time, but unless you want to play plugged in to the computer, you still can only hold so much onboard.

Honestly, I think this is an awesome system...I'm just thinking that with the technology as it is, I don't know why it would be limited to 128 megs of storage. Either a flash memory slot or larger onboard storage would seem to be a very nice upgrade.

Just my two cents...

Matt, Please clarify - It sure sounds from the instruction manual that you've got to either have something pluged into the 1/4 jack or the headphone jack for the tuner to work. Please tell me that's not true. Dave

Hmmmmm 128M might as well be 128K these days.. Still a cool device but with multi-gb memory just pennies these days... I wonder why they even bothered with something that small. I wonder if they have a built in upgrade path?

If I had to guess, I would think "battery life" was the issue. Not much point in having the ability to record two hours, if the battery will only sustain record mode for 1.5 hours.

Just curious....
