I'm a new member and I need advise on purchasing either a 1624 or a 1713. My goal is to get the Harry Chapin sound (a mid-70s 1624 -- I think.) So, I assume the 1624 with the 14 frets and standard Ovation scale is the best fit, but the 1713 seems attractive also. I'm not sure how much difference the 1713 scale feels from my '70 Legend, plus how much difference the bowl sizes make when plugged-in. Any feedback would be super! Also, anyone selling a 1624? Thank you.

I'm not "hip" on the model #'s, but I know it wasn't a 1624. . .
Harry used the nylon w/the lil' "tail" at end of the f/b for a while (from I think "Verites&Balderdash" to about "Danceband on the Titanic" . . . by my mind ain't what it used t'be) then went to Alv/Yairi's for the rest of his time.
Before that, I think it was Martin's.

"Spooky" that this comes up, as I was sorting thru boxes in the garage, and I found an autographed shirt that Harry gave me for my birthday in '77 . . . in Feb., that damn thing'll be 30 . . .

THANKS fer that, CavGuy . . & WELCOME!

. . think I'll hafta' go "peruse" the CD rack . . .

Cliff:

Harry was great! On the "Evening with Harry Chapin" DVD, he's playing what appears to be a Ovation Nylon-string Country Artist 1624. From my initial research on various sites, I don't see another Ovation model like Harry's -- other than the Country Artist 1624 (on the DVD and attached link.) It's a nylon string with a single volume control (pre-80s). If there is there another model that might match, please let me know. I'm not positive, but I think it was a 1613 . . . I'll check my photo archives when I get a chance . . .

Cliff: You are correct. I just rechecked the DVD. Harry's guitar clearly has 12 frets to the body and a fret board extension over the sound-hole. It must be an early 1613. Thanks again!

The 1713 has a wider neck than the 1624 and, as you know, is shorter. I think the 1713 has a much better sound unplugged. It's a cedar top, which sounds a little softer, but the deep bowl makes a big difference. I'm sure the 12 fret, which allows for the bridge to be placed lower on the body, also makes a bid difference. If you are comfortable with the classical wide neck, and now that you know what Harry used, I'd go with the 1713. If you play plugged in and like a little narrower neck, get the 1624.

That's about as good as it gets for a 1624.
