Location: East Wenatchee, WA | I haven't bought a Bass amp since the 80's and recently sold my Peavey TNT150 (starting to feel some remorse there).
The Peavey was a heavy monster weighing it at over 80 lbs.
I just recieved my new stable addition, A Carvin LB75P (18v electronics, Piezo, and solid mahogoney neck through...oh it's purty), and want to get a small but capable bass amp. I was looking at a couple of kickbacks that could be used for both monitoring and small venue, but thought the consolidated wisdom here may have some better advice.
Price is an issue as I blew a lot of my budget on the Bass itself, and would like to keep the weight in the 50lb category. I like the thoughts of 2x10's, but only because I like a lot of "Punch" in my bass playing so a tweeter is probably a need too.
Point something out for me.

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Personally, I would check out ebay and try to find a old used Sunn Concert Lead or Bass head. I use a concert lead head.
You can usually find one for under $200.

Then I would go to the Avatar website and get one of their bass cabs....incredible sound and value for the money.

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | Interesting about Avatar. I saw one of them on ebay that looked real reasonable and the reviews were awesome. I wanted a kickback, but maybe a skillsaw will handle that. There is an Avatar 2x10 on ebay right now and the company is just a couple hundred miles down the road. |

Though I own a bass, I've never owned a bass amp. When I use it for recording or church, I just go in through my DI to the board. For recording I can always beef it up in the mix. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | I own an Avatar cab with the Sunn Concert Lead head. Sounds terrific either in the house or on the stage....fairly lightweight...and I can also use it as a keyboard or synthesisor amp without fear of blowing it out.
The amps are indestructible.... |

Location: Phoenix | I agree that a separate head/cab would be a far more flexible (and easier to carry) setup, but I'd be reluctant to recommend an old Sunn Concert Bass head. I've got one (along with tons of other old stuff)and sure, it's reasonably loud at approximately 130 watts, but the original Sunn company went out of business years ago. Fender bought their name but doesn't support the old products. Several of the transistors in the Sunn are somewhat difficult to find, and the potentiometers are almost impossible to procure. Furthermore, the wiring between the preamp and main power amp boards are push-on connectors that were terribly loose and oxidized on mine--I wound up soldering all of them (about 30 or so connections). However, in its favor, it uses a unique design on the output stage of the power amp, so it offers a little bit of uniqueness to its sound....Bottom line, IMHO, it's a neat old amp but not reliable enough for gigging. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Bill, at the price you can get them for, I say, buy two....and use it as a spare or steal the parts....plus the schematics are easy to obtain and anyone who has basic electronics knowledge would have no trouble fixing one up.
Just my two cents....
I see original Model T heads are going for over 1200 on a regular basis. That's what I used to play through with 2 4x12 cabs, back in the day when I wanted to shake down the walls. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I have a Eden Nemesis combo, and although pricey new, you can find them reasonable in the used market. They are lightweight and can tear a room down. I really like the simplicity also. Bass Mid Trem, and compressor you can turn on/off and a "enhance" knob that really changes the characteristics and a useful notch filter. For gigging it's great because you can make it sound like pretty much any amp you can think of. If you really need to knock down walls, you can use it as a head, or in combo with an extension speaker, or even a powered extention. |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | I have stumbled onto an SWR Redhead 2x10 combo. It is a bit heavy, but reviews I have seen appear to be pretty good. Under $400 and it has never been gigged (supposedley) but is a lot heavier than the other options.
