Joined: November 2006 Posts: 5 Location: Missouri | Hi I'm looking to buy my first Ovation guitar. I looked at at 6778 standard elite and thought that it lacked a little on the high end. The ovation web site says that the Koa wood, SMT and CVT carbon fiber tops give more high end response - BUT I can't find any of these that I can lay my hands on for testing. Can anybody describe the difference in sound with these different tops. Thanks

The carbon fibre tops sound different not only from wood tops, but different from model to model i.e. CVT sounds very different from SMT which sounds different from UniDirectional Textured tops. Carbon tops tend( and this is a HUGE generalization) to be dynamic with a "focused" punchy sound. They sparkle a bit more than wood tops, but sound even across the strings base to treble. They tend not to favor one high or low. Expect some of the textured tops which can have gigantic bass. I'd the only way to know what you like is to listen and play. You can take it on faith, but that's no guarantee you get what you want. "Tupperware" had some sound samples of a varity of these guitars a while back... There are also sound clips of OFC members available on the web and they usually list what instrument they are using. These may get you started: Franklin Moore John B Country Artist Styll

I have described them as "articulate" before due to the clarity in the notes and harmonics. My Spruce 1537 Elite is more subdued and mellow. Both have great bottom ends with the 1537 sounding like a 15" woofer and the W597 like a 1000 watt bass through a 4x10 cabinet, huge and driving. The 2080 (isn't this a CVT also), is a perfect blend between the two with a great mid-range. The 1537 has a great mid also, and the 597 was bright and clear in the mid's but could have been just a tad more mellow. Very subjective thing, opinions....YMMV

Why can't al dimeola, and steve lukither (sp) and shakira (or ever some of people here?!) poop out a sample, and then ovation could post it on the website.
