My wonderful wife just gave me a solid body electric Ovation Viper III. It appears to be all original and is VG to Mint condition. I think the finish is called "Nutmeg" and is a rich dark brown transparent finish on an ash body. The 3 pu's really crank. Anyway, my questions for all the experts are these: 1. where can I find the exact date or at least year of manufacture from the serial number (the Ovation website only gives a range from '75 to '80; 2. Anyone have some interesting history on this model of guitar??? Thanks for responding !!!!!

That's as close as you'll get with the available data. Certain features such as bridge type (Ovation/Schaller) will place it earlier or later in production.

For history you need to get a copy of "the book".

Sparky, do you know of any more like that down there? (Wives or Vipers. Your choice.)

What is "the book" and where do I get one? Thanks all! Is the info on this site that Viper III were only made in '79 and '80 accurate? I think mine is the early bridge type since it has the molded black part. So maybe that puts it in '79???

The History of Ovation Guitars by Walter Carter.

I personally hope to see an updated version for 2006.

Just wondering. I know a Sparky from OK and his real name is Oliver. Never thought to ask him if he played guitars....
