Overhere ,our " dear " Prime Minstrel ( boss of Danmark )is under investigation by the Ombudsman, seems that He`s refusing to be interviewed by a reporter ( " K " who has won the cavling prize ,danish equivalent of the pulitzer ) who got the Ombudsman to look into it ,claiming "Discrimation "( the Prime will talk to others, just not to (" K " who wants to ask " Prime " questions about the war in Iraq ) ,now, my eldest son who is studying JURA,says that allthough the Ombudsman has no power as such,His report could jeopardize the " Prime ", so my question is ; Do U have something similar ,or can your " Prime Minstrel " do as He pleases ? (I did notice there are a few attorneys present here )I`m just being curious..

We stay away from discussing Politics here because it leads to vicious remarks and foul language.

Sure, anyone here can refuse to talk to the press or refuse a one on one interview with a specific reporter.

Any individual can refuse to talk to anyone...especially the press and the Pulitzer (or equiv.) doesn't make a "good" reporter. Sometimes the qualities of the reporter/writer are overwhelmed by the adoration from winning the award.

He/she can refuse to talk to anyone, even a judge in court...course, he/she may suffer consequences but that is the consequences are a result of the individual's actions.

Over here, maybe our government officials talk to often and about too many things to some of our press. That is true for either side of the aisle.

Reporters/news agencies are not "pure"...many examples of fraudulent "reporting".

I forgot...what were we talking about? ;)

Vic, I think the biggest issue is that anymore, at least over here, it's expected for anyone interviewed by the press to answer any question they ask. If they don't, for reasons either personal or professional, it's assumed they have something to hide, and the press almost always begins to dig deeper and more intensely to find out what this "secrecy" is.

Unfortunately, while sometimes exposing crooked officials, businessmen, etc has a positive outcome, I think that the press in general is just way too intense about publicizing every little trivial detail of someone's life. Sometimes too far is just too far.

Anyone should be able to refuse to answer a question, without being vilified and/or hounded to death over it. However, in the world today, that is frequently not the case it seems.

Nope, no ombudsman. But we have the press, and various ways to investigate others for political gain thru congressional committees, or presidential blue ribbon panels and the like. The effect seems to be the same as the ombudsman.
If the US were a small country I think we'd be like Denmark.

We used to have something in the US called "the Fourth Estate". Now they're just another mouthpiece for the the political parties and have turned the estate into their own private hunting grounds. They are bought and paid for by whichever master they choose to serve.

Anyone over here can refust to talk to the press. It doesn't matter though since the press will make up their own story anyway.......
