I am curious. It seems that woven graphite tops are what the top of the line graphite guitar makers are using. Who makes this stuff? Do all the guitar makers buy from one common source. Do the current tops like on the 2080 have birch ply in the center?

Good questions. Do the (new) tops come from same company as the USA made bowls?

I think the tops are made by a company in Springfield, Mass ??? Could be wrong, or maybe I dreamed it. My grandparents used to live in Springfield. Dave

I did a little resarch on this subject for a project that I'm working on. The following link is to a manufacturer who makes the stuff. It was interesting to read about how short the supply of it is and made me wonder if it affected Ovation at all.

Interesting. And we think that tonewoods are getting hard to come by. Wonder if this has limited the growth of these kinds of guitars. I was getting some pickups put in my acoustic doubleneck and the shop, who makes guitars, says that graphite tops are about $500 to someone like him who would only buy one or two.

If they run out of Carbon fiber, they also sell Kevlar... imagine that marketing campaign:

They could always go with really thin wood tops and spray them with either Teflon coating or Line-X material...then you could not only play guitar, but either cook on it or walk on it, respectively...

Actually, that's what the coating on the Elite T reminds me of - like someone sprayed truck bedliner material all over a guitar.

Fugot, those picts look like you have the textured top of the UTE rather than the normal 2080 top.

I special ordered my Adamas to have the UTE textured top. You too?

The bottom picture is my Adamas (UTE) top. The top is the standard cross-weave 2080 top. Fugot's pictures look more like the bottom photo as opposed to the top one.

The "U" in U581/U681 is unidirectional fiber. The "T" is the texture that "laying it up" with fabric between it and the "die" (there is another word for it but I can't remember now) causes.

The 1680, 2080, and some of the export Adamas' have what is called "NWT", which I believe is the same material as the CVT's, accept there's no finish to speak ofon the top. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.

what fred says. the top on mine looks crossweave, feels not rough, but not smooth either. (somewhere between the adamas I and II's and the SMt tops to the touch.) But it's funny how woody the 2080 sounds. peace
