| I have a Balladeer 1661 (the first model that was a cutaway) in my guitar collection. I am curious as to what Ovation would call the body style, based on "traditional" terms. The guitar's proportions seem to be more hourglass than a dreadnought, so my guess is that it might better be described as an auditorium sized guitar, similar to an OM Martin (a 14 fret version of the OOO). Thanks for any thoughts you might have. |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | You're pretty close, since, as I recall from the "book," that they used a Martin as bench mark. But I look at them and see them as their own distinct animals and just call it the ovation body style. |

Dreadnought: Body Length: 20"
Body Width: 15 5/8"
OOO: Body Length: 19 3/8"
Body Width: 15"
00 : Body Length :18 7/8"
Body Width: 14 5/16"
Ovation: Body Length: 20 1/4"
Body Width: 15 3/4"
Martin Dimensions taken from an Elderly Instruments Catalog. There are slight variations depending on if it is a 12 or 14 fret model.
Ovation Dimensions taken by me from my 1624 Country Artist hanging on the wall. Body depths were not given because of different bowl depths . :D
Ovation most closely resembles a Martin OOO

On the other topic, I have to say I'm surprised that at a comparison the Ovation body is both wider and longer than Martins. It just makes it more amazing that I've never played with a Martin of any size or shape that was more comfortable than an Ovation to hold and play, yet the O's are bigger. One more stroke of genius from the bowl guys! |

Robert L. Martin worked for Kaman aerospace back in the day, and was in charge of the department that ran the Applause project. Although he himself was not that involved, he is credited on the Patent for the Bowl design as its Inventor.
Shame on you all for not knowing this !!!! :( |
