Some of you may be interested in this. The local PBS station is showing that Van Morrison will be on Austin City Limits tomorrow night, the 18th, apparently for the full hour.

Saw it last night, came here this morning to bump the OT: Random Musings thread, but you beat me to it.

I've never been a big fan of Van Morrison. Maybe because the local 'oldies' station plays that fscking "Moondance" three times a day, every day.

I didn't know he (Van Morrison) played saxophone, and I was doubly surprised to see him blowing a harp. The cover of "I Can't Stop Loving You" was just fantastic, IMHO. "Not Feelin It" was pretty damn good, too. I missed the first part of the show, coming in somewhere around the middle of "Playhouse."

I thought the best song of the night was, and I'm guessing at the title, was St.James Infirmary. That was the one where he played sax. I kind of expected him to play alot more of his most popular songs, but I ended up really enjoying the show.

And it stoned me!

Yes, "St. James Infirmary" was very well done, and that was the one with him on sax. I once read somewhere that Van Morrison doesn't do very many of his 'hits' during sets because he doesn't want to be seen as a nostalgia act (or maybe heard it on the radio). Frankly, I'm glad he didn't play more old stuff. If I had turned on ACL and he was doing "Moondance" or "Domino," I'd have turned the channel and not discovered that he's actually quite musical.

I've seen Van a few times over the years, including this Austin City Limits broadcast. His shows are always more like a music lesson than a stage show. What I mean to say, is that it's all about being in the music, not flashy performance or hype.

Masterful.
