Location: Copenhagen Denmark | Hmm..Great Site..but decided to follow Alpep`s advice,about "Stand alone Machines" V S "Computer Wizardry",so got myself a KORG D3200 & a bunch of Mic`s..will need to talk to Alpep,`cause it`s one Mindbogling Humdinger but what can I say...Fantastic Percussion Section..Great Pre-Amps. ..(including Compressors)..all of utmost quality..now all I`ve got to do is to find out How to make it Work :rolleyes: ;)

First let me describe my current setup. I run everything into a Behringer XP-2004 analog mixer and then into a M-audio 2496 card. In between I had to insert an M-audio Audio-Buddy just to boost levels a bit. My DAW is Sonar-5.
Here's the issue, I've got a lot of noise. I use top of the line mogwai and monsters but still too much noise The root of the problem is Behringer mixer. If I plug straight into mic pre's of the Audio-Buddy everything is quiet as a mouse. I can't run that way permanently because a) I can't access my effects and 2) I don't have enough inputs. Remember, everythng goes in via microphones (Davy don't do A/E guitars).
So HERE is the question - I'm thinking of investing in one of those digital control surfaces (like the M-Audio Project I/O or the Tascam), which combines digital mixer with DAW control all by firewire. Does anyone here have any experience with these kinds of units?

Location: Phoenix AZ | That's the point Cliff, if I'm going to invest in another (better) mixer, why not go for the digital I/O and DAW interface ??? I'm just wondering if there are some hidden downsides that I'm not aware of.

Location: Scotland | Dave, while I'm not a huge fan of Behringer products their mixers are pretty good and in my experience do not produce excessive or intrusive noise if set up correctly. If any mixer is generating noise it's usually because of incorrect gain structure. Make sure you are setting up the mixer to operate at unity gain. If it's still producing noise after that it could be faulty. |

Location: Latitude 39.56819, Longitude -105.080066 | Agreed, most Berringer stuff is ok and not too noisy. Could be faulty but could also be an incorrect gain structure. Has it always been noisy or just recently started?
Biggest problem with mixer/interface is the same as with any combo unit. If something goes wrong, your whole rig is F*&*^ked! and you are out of commission.
Dave, you want to try out the MOTU 828MK2 unit? I will send it to you and you can play around with it until you either decide to go the combo route or keep the MOTU unit (which has plenty of input/outputs by the way). |
