Location: Waterloo, IL | Looking to get an electric guitar for Christmas this year. Funds are somewhat limited, so have to go for the lower end of the spectrum. Al has given me a great price on a Hamer solidbody. However, I really like the looks of a semi-hollow, like the epi dot. Made a trip to Guitar Center Sunday afternoon to pick up a Crate 15 watt amp they had for $50. Fit the budget and plenty big enough for the small room I play in. I wanted to play a few solids and compare them to a semi-hollow, but there were too many kids playing too loud for me to hear what I was playing (hearing aids in both ears).
What is the difference in sound between a solid body and a semi-hollow body? Thanks. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I like the lighter weight of the semi hollows. BUT ... the Hamer solids are one hell of a guitar. If it was me I'd grab the Hamer just because it's so much more guitar for the money than a dot epi. Dave |

Location: SoCal | The Epi's are a great value for the money, the Hamer is much much more guitar. You won't find a better deal than Al's. If you can afford it, you should get it.
I've heard jazz played on everything from a big box guitar (ES 175), to a nylon string guitar, to a Tele. It depends on the guitar settings, the amp, and what you got inside you. |

Semi's are definately lighter weight, more prone to feedback and are typically associated with jazz, rockabilly, etc.
but Ted Nugent played a semi and he rocked pretty hard......
Hamer is a better built guitar but probably costs a bit more than the Epi. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Somebody forgot to tell Brian Setzer that rockers prefer solid bodies. Personally, I love the tone of a semi with single coils. I have to agree with my fellow OFC members . . . go with the Hamer if it is anywhere close in price. You'll like the Epi, but from what others say, you'll love the Hamer. If you still want a semi some time in the future if and when your finances permit, you can add a higher quality instrument to your collection if you feel you need something different or in addition to the Hamer. |

Cheap too (excellent quality) Yeah, that guitar you snagged, with the bridge and tuner upgrades, --- sweet, sweet deal. Most Echo's go for around the same price but w/o the upgrades.
