This is strange, i just tried to log on to my ebay account and it refuses to give me access; I am on-line with an ebay live-chat operator and he wants information that I may or may not have given ebay when I originally opened my account, but he cannot explain why my password doesn't work, he just keeps asking for personal information...has this ever happened with anyone else?...

I would be suspicious as to whether you were really talking with ebay. Possibly your computer was hacked and when you thought you were going to ebay, it directed you to another location? Try to log on with your passwords from another computer....

I tried it from another computer, and it still fails to access, so now I guess I will have to contact the real Ebay and change my password immediately..

Chances are eBay discovered someone using your account for nefarious purposes and put an immediate halt to it. This happened to me once before and I changed my passwords, including the PayPal account and the email account that the eBay emails go to. I suffered no harm as a result of eBay's quick action.

eBay should be able to authenticate themselves to you fairly easily. Believe it or not, they actually have a fairly large and very aggressive security team.

I sent an email to Ebay (info@ebay.com) giving them my account name and password requesting they close my account. This is strange. Has anyone ever been locked out of their ebay account for no apparent reason?...I surf ebay all the time, with guitars on my watch list. Until today I have never had a problem. The presumed live-chat ebay rep kept asking for personal information. He had an american name but his english typing wasn't quite grammatically correct...

I've tried to log onto eBay on a few past occasions and been denied access but usually attribute it to their system or server momentarily being shut down, or something on my end. It has happened on PayPal as well. However, it was never long-term. I've always obtained access on subsequent attempts.

I contacted ebay, changed my password, my account's fine now, yada yada... Still, it's bizarre that the presumed Ebay live-chat computer page looked completely legit when I clicked on the help Icon...

Was that help icon/live-chat link on an email you received or on eBay.com home page? If on an email page, you done good by not giving them anything. If it was on the eBay home page, it was probably legit.

BTW, did you happen to get any second chance emails lately and click on any links in the email?

Sorry about the length of this, but I have a graduate degree in computer science and I thought I'd share some safety tips. Phishing scammers are *extremely* sophisticated. You wouldn't believe the number of emails I get from what look like genuine banks and other institutions with which I have accounts, usually asking that I verify account information because of some 'problem' with the account by clicking on an embedded link. If you look at email headers you can usually tell a spoof by the originating server(s), which in no way resembles the legitimate server it's trying to pass itself off as. If you do click on the link it takes you to a page that someone has crafted to look exactly like the legitimate page, but is not. Any personal info you enter becomes the property of a scammer to use for nefarious purposes. For web pages, make sure it is a secure site (https:// starts the address) and that you see the secure site icon at the bottom of your browser window. A spoof site won't have either of those as they cannot possibly register with Verisign or such to get an encryption certificate. And NEVER give out personal info over the telephone unless YOU originated the call and know for certain that the phone number you dialed is legit (like, you didn't call the number listed on a mail/suspicious page that asks you to contact them for account/identity verification). If you get a suspicious mail copy the headers, or if directed to a suspicious site copy the address from the address bar of the browser, and send them with an explanation in an email to either abuse@XXX.XXX or spoof@XXX.XXX (where XXX.XXX is whatever company, such as ebay.com). You will quickly hear back from the security team as every site admin keeps such a mailbox exactly for that purpose.

And I'll say it again - any email you get from Ebay or Paypal will have your REAL NAME at the top.

g8r, thanks for the info. I think a lot of us know this stuff, but it's surprising how many people fall for these scams by not using common sense. If some site needs to "refresh" your personal information, they probably shouldn't have it in the first place.

Glad to help. Didn't mean to imply that us O'cultists (did I just coin a new word? ) don't know the dangers, but it's good to be reminded.
