Not that I think it was necessarily a bad thing to post about, I just wonder is all...too much free time. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | No GGG, I was there! I bid $30 more, with 20 seconds left. And a totally different person outbid me. This person had not even bid on this thing before. And hit it the same moment as I did (I guess). I shoulda said $165, and made him at least pay $200.
Just shows that I didn't want it bad enough... Or I'm poor... Or both! |

Location: Lebanon, TN | If you want to e serious about your last minute bidding on Ebay then there are a number of software products out there that help you throw in your dollars at the last moment. Sometimes it is succesful sometimes it isn't.
I have had good success with a product called Auction Sentry. It let's you add the auctions you have in your My Watching list and set up delayed bids for it to pitch in with seconds to go in the auction. It then synchronizes with Ebay's clock and bids up to your maximum.
I typically run it set to bid at the 15 second mark and it will automatically change the bid increment upto your maximum when it get's a response that someone elses bid is automatically higher. Depending on the time it takes and what someone's proxy bid limit is it can beat it down, but not obviously if someone's proxy is higher than your maximum bid.
Fro example I tried to snipe that 1618 that was up earlier this week. No other bidder's other than one other guy who opened with $250 3 days out. I hit it up at the last moment with a maximum of $450. He obviously had a higher proxy as it went for $5 higher. So even sniping does not work all the time.
That said it is great for watching/acting for youwhile you are at work, shopping or running chores. Nothing quite like the excitement of coming back to the little green message saying you won something or the disappointment of the little red message saying you did not. However my missus has gotten wise to this and if I am anxious to get back she runs to my laptop to see if I have AS running and curses at me :D

Location: Midland, MI | Why not just put in your maximum bid and let the auction run it's course? Your proxy bid will never bid more than what it takes to win the auction, up to your maximum, so it's not like you'd ever wind up paying more than what you set as your maximum anyway? |

Location: Lebanon, TN | Some folks love sniping others detest it as 'unreasonable' and 'un-ethical'. Reality is sniping can never beat the best price which is good for the seller. It only works when you are paying what you would be prepared to (or less) for the item anyway.
There's no right answer. Som folks like and get value from using this technique. The software (in the case of Auction Sentry) is free. It has saved me money and I will continue to use it for the future.
Just trying to help anyone in the Club who was wondering what all the fuss was about. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Over the past few years, I've finally resolved to use two approaches to my eBay purchasing. In one method, I decide the maximum amount that I'm willing to pay for an item and enter that as my maximum. Sometimes, the maximum I am wiling to pay is only the opening bid. Then I walk away and never look back until it is over. Bidding occurs autoomatically. On the other hand, if it is something that I really want, and I can be available on-line at the end, then I may first enter a small bid early on just to make sure I don't lose track of it. Then at the close of the auction, I again decide the maximum amount I would be willing to pay and snipe it with 3 to 5 seconds left. Sometimes I prevail, sometimes I don't. Personally, as a buyer, I like it this way. If everybody did it this way, it would serve as a blind auction where everybody had one (and the same) concurrent opportunity to purchase an item with no stressful second guessing. I've often won items where my maximum was hundreds of dollars more than the winning bid. I've also sniped at the end only to thereafter receive a notice that my maximum was lower than the current bid, so it didn't even record. Of course, the most gratifying win of all occurs when your winning bid is your maximum where many bidders are involved. I don't have the perspective of a seller as I have never sold anything on eBay (only purchased). A seller may detest this approach. |

But in the end, its the one that is willing to pay the most for the item that wins.
As a Seller I would like to see a tool that shows me who is actively viewing and who has "Automated Bids" in place during the last 30 minutes. |

Apparently, I have acquired a very high tolerance for opportunism & hypocrisy. I want something-for-nothing, but believe anything I sell should bring a premium & new benchmark. |

When I used to deal on Overstock.com, they had what is called a "soft close". If there was a bid on an item within the last 10 min., it would continue the auction for another 30 min. (I think) This would insure the most interested party would win the item, instead of the one who happened to snipe it. |
