I was re-re-re-reading my posts on another thread (if there were no O's), and I realized my likes in a guitar have a common thread. I gravitate toward guitars with Cedar tops.

I'm sorry, but my favorite at the moment is the Taylor GS Cedar/Mahogany. I'm fine with Seagulls, too except the wider neck troubles my arthritis.

AND!!!...whenever I go to visit my sister in Jersey, I go to the Paramus GC and wind up spending a lot of time with the GC Baladeer Special with the Cedar top.

So...what I think I want is to optimize the sound of the Cedar top by making this into a Baladeer LX with a Cedar top, deep bowl (do they have a GS deep bowl?),and maybe that beautiful Abalone rosette.

Will this sound like what I want, or should I just get the Taylor?

Since you are asking here, get the cedar Ovation.

If you were to ask over on the Taylor forum, I'd say get the GS (those are REALLY nice, BTW).

Either way, you are getting a really nice guitar. Its strictly a question of blondes vs brunettes from there.

hi john,
the taylor GS series are great sounding instruments. probably the best sounds coming out of a taylor, in my humble opinion. let me share my experience with you for what it's worth. i sold a gibson j-200 on eBay and used some of the proceeds to put a GS model on layaway here at a local shop on island. i visited the guitar a few times and then noticed the top was starting to ripple on it. this one was brand new from the factory. i checked on the shop's humidity level and saw it was running about 56%. this was a major red flag for me. i got a refund and then promptly bought my adamas w597 online. i would suggest you holding up the top of the GS guitar to eye level and catch the light reflecting off the top to check for any rippling. then i would make sure to keep it at proper humidity levels and not play it outdoors much. taylor does guarantee their work and that particular guitar has the bolt on/shimmable neck which is of some relief.

As opposed to "off island". When visiting it's also handy to be familiar with the terms "ocean-side" and "mountain-side".

Off Island music stores?

I see a fleet of small boats, loaded with guitars everyone wants, floating just outside the state line and broadcasting their wares into Hawiaai....

Pirate Music stores;, "Avast ye scurvy musicians!"

wabbit,
that's "mauka" (mountain-side) and "makai" (ocean-side)

i'm wondering if john responded, "on island", to mean that that is the clue as to why the top on the taylor was rippling? if so, i also stated that the guitar was factory fresh and that the humidity level was 56%. the top should not be rippled given those conditions.

since there are several islands in hawaii that people reside on, when we say "on island" we are referring to the particular island we are living on(da rock we stay on!). if someone who lives here on Big Island goes to Maui or even to the mainland (CONUS) to visit we would say they are "off-island".
